In Canada if you donate via 3rd party, they get the massive tax credit.

While it is Air Canada offering the promotion, there is a mutual sentiment expressed: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

But, in any other circumstance, a donation would only be deductible to the extent the donation exceeded the value received. In this case, why would an individual expect a deduction/credit?

I would rather buy miles to the regular price than support that “forcibly displaced individual” campaign, or as most people would call them, illegal migrants.

At least in the U.S. (since Miles4Migrants is registered as a 501(c)(3) here, I assume this is in fact a tax deductible donation) that's right, but you reduce the donation by the value they report you getting -- which I suspect is less than 1.3/1.4 cents a mile (though I could be wrong and maybe they're overvalued!). I agree it's a significant consideration for how good a deal this is -- not sure how we know how Aeroplan would value the miles.

In what way is this supporting "illegal migrants"? The organization helps people who have been granted visas or asylum get plane tickets to their host countries.

Anyone know if the credit card name must match the aeroplan number? Was gonna buy points for my wife too but wasn't sure if the credit card must match the aeroplan number (I'm just worried it will exceed the limit per person, even though its my wife's AC number)

Hey Alex - No, the credit card does not need to match the Aeroplan account number. As long as the Name and Aeroplan account numbers match, you should be able to donate to Miles4Migrants on your wife's behalf and she can also receive up to the maximum of 75k points from Air Canada.
