Once in a while, we’ll see airlines highlight the special ways that flights are crewed, whether it’s an all-female crew, all-black crew, mother-daughter pilot duo, etc. Well, Taiwan-based SkyTeam carrier China Airlines just had a milestone flight, and it was neither a coincidence, nor was it planned by the company.

Does it really matter to me? NO! On a recent YVR DFW 321 redeye the FA in F was a male. He seemed to know exactly when to see if any one wanted/needed anything without being bothersome. On the DFW YVR flight in F the FA was female and she was hard to find during the flight, The male was so good that I wrote a letter to AA giving him credit for good service.

Knee-jerk reaction. The point is to highlight sexism and underrepresentation, just like women do (and should do) in many other fields. But I can guarantee you don't leave such asinine comments about those events.

There are some of us here who are non-heterosexual, me for one. They're not my type, but there are guys out there called "rice queens" who are really into men like this. So get off your Abrahamic high horse and acknolwedge that we're queer, we're here, and get used to that before we make it mandatory.

❤️❤️ Freedom and democracy make a huge difference in Taiwan for China Airlines crews. People can freely voice for change and improvements, whereas in communist China, dictatorship decides everything for all state-run Chinese airlines.

Icarus,

Better check your facts. I know a male flight attendant that just retired, in October 2025, after 38 years of Cabin Crew services from China Airlines,

It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt.

Then I am sure the people of New York are glad that China Airlines is from Taiwan (Republic of China), and NOT from Mainland/Communist China (People's Republic of China).

Just because somebody comments something, doesn't make it true. The crew is from Taiwan. It is NOT from China. And how is pooping considered "In Related News" ???

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt.

Then do us all a favour and stick with your local airline. Can't speak for that local airline, but for rest of us passengers, we will be happier not having to hear you whine the whole flight.

Blatant is a very offensive word and inappropriately used with the word homosexuality amounting to discrimination. You better off fly with communist owned and controlled airlines such as Air China, China Eastern...

In my line of work it is sometimes necessary to have a Chaperone of the other sex present for sensitive discussions or interactions. Congratulations to the group for being able to arrange this, but I might have considered taking one female Flight Attendant just in case a situation arose where a female Flight Attendant would be helpful for legal, medical or cultural reasons.

No, Darlene, Blatant is not a "very offensive" word.

Definition: completely lacking in subtlety; very obvious.

There is nothing offensive about this as a word, Darlene. Your comment is a blight on intellectual integrity, Darlene, I am asking you strongly to redact it.

Communist China and Taiwan (the Republic of China) are completely different countries. Taiwan is rightfully the successor state to the Kingdom of China, while Communist China is a culture only like 70 years old. Taiwan basically has modern standards. Again, these are completely different countries and different peoples.

I absolutely agree with Dan. For example in my country it is a punishable offence for a male physician to physically examine a female patient without a female chaperone present, particularly if curtains need to be drawn during the examination for privacy/modesty. On a long-duration flight, it is entirely possible that a situation might occur which could necessitate physical contact between aircrew and a passenger in order to assist them, whether for a medical reason or for a more mundane reason such as assistance in the washroom for a handicapped passenger or child (travelling alone) should the need arise. In such an instance, a flight attendant of the same sex might be ideal, especially if the passenger is uncomfortable having a person of the opposite sex with them in such a situation (which could even be haram for some religions). Having an all single-sex crew is poor planning and even worse if it is intentional.
For a different reason, an all-female crew is also undesirable if large belligerent male passengers need to be handled. Unless the all-female crew include champion pugilists/weight-lifters or the like. Air marshals, if present, are to prevent hijackings, not to restrain unruly passengers. Physical needs require matching physical solutions, whether for delicate situations or rough ones. The airline/institution that does not plan for that has failed.

Good. In the same that we should celebrate an all-women crew, etc., we should ALSO celebrate an all-male one.

The definition of feminism - which has been all-but forgotten - is EQUALITY between men and women. Ergo, and very logically, if something were worth celebrating for all women, it is equally worthy for all men, and vice-versa.

If as a feminist you push back against ANYTHING masculine, against ANYTHING celebrating men, then you are actually advocating for a very ANTI-feminist stance.

Thank you, Darryl Macklem, for a very accurate and polite understanding.
Therefore, before an overexcited queer reader "ORD" makes my acknowledgement "mandatory", I'd better politely rephrase my comments / questions as follows: "What is the purpose of such an excitement by all queer readers and contributors? Is there something to do with the "à la av-geek" purpose of OMAAT?"

"it would not be a tragedy should both of you be (redacted) by a bull elephant" SICK THING TO SAY. But interesting if you study the stats on your community's interest in this kind of thing.

Try "THINKING". You’re acting like society automatically sees men as better, but that’s not what this is about at all. It’s just a flight crew doing their jobs. There’s nothing to “celebrate” or turn into some point about gender. Not everything needs to be twisted into a competition. Fucking buffoon.

My IQ has been measured at 156. I have a degree in a STEM subject from a US News and World Report Top Ten university (all schools). I had two Nobel winners as teachers. How were those rides on the short bus?

And, yes, I'm a narcissist who is convinced that he is superior to mouth-breeders like you. You're not causing me any shame by typing it in all-caps like the retard who inhabits the White House, who I was proud to vote against three times. Now go back in your basement and guiltily pleasure yourself to photos of Usha Vance.

Wow! Miles of bragging about IQ scores, famous professors, and a college ranking, but somehow not a single word about a JOB or MONEY. It’s almost like listing academic trophies is easier than proving you’ve done anything with them. Surprise, surprise.

If your goal was to sound superior, maybe try accomplishments that exist outside a classroom. Right now it just reads like you peaked at school and earning degrees and never got around to the part where you actually used them for something.

I seriously suggest you get some psychological help URGENTLY!

It's funny how your "tribe" are always the ones preaching equality and how it is so terrible to judge or look down on someone, but will always be the first to start calling out Skilled trades and other occupations who you deem "stupid". But when you really think about it, it is very understandable. The very deep-rooted self-hatred of your community is a very unfortunate thing. You'll need your "ricequeen' to humiliate you in the bedroom and perform some CBT (and no, I do not mean cognitive behavioral therapy, the other type), and you'll feel much better!

I actually don't see any comments about feminism being an issue here. I am a feminist (aren't most people?) and think this is great. If anything, I see many comments from men weirdly obsessed with the idea that an all-male crew means gay porn. When I saw this picture, I thought "look how happy they look!" When other men on this comment thread saw this picture, they thought "somethings gay about this". If you want to be angry about something, maybe start there?

@Mason and @Watson: Oof. Pretending that women aren't objectified, discriminated against, or treated like second class citizens in Taiwan or in aviation is intellectually disingenuous, and interpreting these men's actions as "just like women" pointing out sexism is, well, sorely lacking in a women's perspective...as I am sure most women in your orbit would not be surprised by. But sure! Women are "snowflakes!"

As someone who has long observed and expressed solidarity with the Flight Attendants Union — including both the one at China Airlines and the Taiwan Flight Attendants Union — I would like to briefly outline the background of these events. For many years, Taiwanese airlines either prohibited or discouraged men from becoming flight attendants. This was rooted in the belief that “service work” was something only women should do. Such an attitude not only devalues women but also undermines the dignity of the profession. Consequently, airlines in Taiwan have long designed extremely tight uniforms for their female flight attendants — impractical for work, yet praised by designers as “sexy”.

For a long time, airlines in Taiwan had no trade unions at all (EVA Air, in fact, continues to suppress union activities quite aggressively). Around 2016, with the support of other unions, the flight attendants at China Airlines formed their own trade union and launched the first-ever strike organised by flight attendants in Taiwan. After years of struggle with the company, the union gradually gained the ability to enter into negotiations over workplace policies — including those related to gender. Around the same time that the company relaxed its restrictions on the number of male flight attendants per aeroplane, it also introduced a policy allowing female flight attendants to wear trousers while on duty. For many Western readers, this may seem unremarkable, but for the flight attendants at China Airlines, it marked the result of years of collective effort and reflected the company’s growing respect for its employees. Of course, it also challenged the gender stereotype that only women should perform service work. In this sense, I believe it represented a feminist achievement.

It is also worth noting that within the union, male and female flight attendants have always stood side by side. Among the union leaders sued by China Airlines for organising strike actions were both men and women. Together, they fought for fairer policies — the removal of the quota limiting male flight attendants, the option for female flight attendants to wear trousers on duty, and the introduction of menstrual leave for women employees. They are allies, not opponents, contrary to what some commentators have suggested.
