Several weeks ago, we learned how Houston-based ultra low cost carrier Avelo Airlines would get into the deportation flight business. With this project, we’re seeing the airline base three Boeing 737s at Arizonas Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA), with flights having started as of the middle of May. Anyway, here’s an interesting update regarding this.

Never thought I would see the day where people are against removing criminals from the country...such a sad divisive world we now live in where people can't see the difference between sanity and suicidal empathy. I wish more airlines would sign up to remove criminals from the US!

@ Matt -- I don't think that's what most people oppose. If that's really what you believe, then you haven't spent a lot of time trying to understand the other perspective.

This is standard. Most government airplanes are plain white. Used by various agencies. You see many out at IAD.

There are multiple other airlines contracted by the Government that move deportees or have done so in the past - Delta, United and American made more than 1000 of those flights in 2019, it's been going on for decades.

I guess the media picking on the little startup who can't afford to sue...

The gov't might have required it. I don't think the "shame" term is appropriate here.

That's because we used to only deport legitimate criminals - not teenagers here their entire lives for not coming to a full and complete stop. Source - I'm married to an immigration attorney.

People aren't against removing criminals. They are against renditioning anyone (including American citizens) off the streets and denying them a court hearing. Due process is explicitly prescribed by the Constitution inn order to prevent the government from unilaterally taking adverse actions against individuals. These disappearances are anti-American, and also illegal as all hell.

I'll fly with airlines who don't participate in patently illegal activities.

The government doesn't require it (see other deportation flights operating with the company's livery - specifically Global). This is a decision made to shield Avelo's reputation because they know what they are doing is disgusting. Yes, if they really are dangerous criminals, let's remove them. In this case, our government is creating a pretext to remove otherwise lawful individuals (that the MAGAts lap up like mewling kittens).

Let's be intellectually honest about the situation. The cruelty is the point. Stephen Miller (DJT's henchman) is against all immigration (as are many of DJT's followers).

These flights are happening whether it’s Avelo or another airline. If Avelo needs the revenue, which they obviously do, then, so be it. Avelo’s responsibility is to ensure the flight operates safely and humanely (as in not like Frontier and not like AA out of LGA). No evidence Avelo is mistreating its passengers.

These deportations are incredibly shameful and Avelo painting its planes this way is an acknowledgement of the shame. Again, if not Avelo, another, perhaps worse, airline would be picking up the slack.

Stop blaming Avelo and start shitting on dumbass retards who voted in the current administration.

Ben, I am calling you out on this subject, much like I did on the article you published about the FA who was apparently flaunting Aircraft Safety Regulations.
You are starting to come across as a closet liberal author who is concealing his views within his blogs, thereafter, expecting the readers to shoot his bullets for him.
This is not a rash, knee jerk reaction to your recent blog posts, but, a well considered response to my growing concerns.
Your reviews, I consider to be well worth reading and I have learned much from your writings as well as those of other contributors. However, Ben I am starting to wonder ….

This is wrong and stupid. Aircraft *operated* by the government are often plain white and even frequently do not carry visible N numbers. These aircraft are NOT operated by the government but FOR the government.

Your immigration attorney spouse probably flamed out of biglaw. If your spouse had made equity partner you’d be living so large you wouldn’t concern yourself with miles and points. Yet here you are. That being said, your spouse is providing a needed service to clients and to society at large while I’ve accumulated my net worth by skimming off the mergers and acquisitions that have exacerbated inequality in America.

Kevin - source on DL UA and AA "operating more than 1000 of those flights in 2019"?? I dont care if they do but last I checked, none of these carriers have operated deportation flights. I'm not personally opposed to it but lets talk about facts. Of course they operate plenty of charters for the government - military charters in particular but thats not what we are talking about.

Avelo isn’t participating in an illegal action. It’s merely complicit. Most major law firms are also complicit in the ongoing erosion of the rule of law in America. The problem here is we have to either be complicit or be insolvent.

They should be proud. These people are being deported because they broke the law and should not be here. Mind you Obama also deported over 3 million people.
So I don’t know why some think this is new

Quiet some nerve to “call him out” in his own blog where he repeatedly said he post whoever he likes or finds interesting. Also very free speech of you to criticize someone for their own opinions and thoughts, modern GOP eh, country of freedom, self determinations and stuff, NOT

A lot of people forget that crossing the border illegally is a Federal Crime. So, everyone who does it is a criminal just by the fact doing this. Those who were brought as a kids should self-deport ASAP if their current age permitted and apply the right to come back legally at US embassy at their country of origin/citizenship.
Call him/herself a "Dreamer" or anything similar does not give any release of the responsibility for foing a criminal act.
I love that all white " White Power" livery. 🙂

Most people oppose tolerating illegal immigrants in their country. Further, "most people" get rather irate when being forced to pay for it with their tax money. This is a 65-35 issue, Ben. How this came about over the past 4 years adds to the frustration; having an administration throw the door open to everyone and anyone (unless they want to do it legally) just to spite the previous (45) administration. That's one reason, there are others. It was outrageous and now that Autopen and Company are out of office, there's a huge mess to clean up.

That's not accurate. This is more like showing up at a foreign airport without a visa or doing so under false pretenses. You're denied entry and immediately deported. You have no right to a hearing; you're gone. Such is the case here. Only Biden and his handlers facilitated millions of such cases and now you're demanding hearings for them? Nonsense.

Get them the eff out of here. Send them home.

Actually, most of the aliens deported under Obama received no hearing of any kind, if that's what you mean by due process. Most were caught near the border and immediately deported with little or no opportunity to make an asylum claim.

the administration just shook up a couple of leadership positions in ICE and DHS because the speed of removals has been too slow so Avelo might recognize that they can keep those planes very busy.

No other scheduled passenger airline would touch this business right now even if they have before so you really can't blame Avelo for grabbing government cash while they can.

The US Constitution is clear. Any PERSON, not citizen, not legal resident, ANY PERSON who is subject to the US government's jurisdiction (IE on US soil and not some foreign official with diplomatic immunity) is subject to US law. That includes the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It is ILLEGAL to detain and deport someone without giving them a chance to argue that in front of a judge. Full stop. It DOES NOT MATTER how they got into the country.

If they have no valid asylum case, by all means, send them home. But you HAVE to give them due process first. Because if you have one group that isn't guaranteed due process, NOBODY is guaranteed due process. What stops ICE from picking your useless ass up and sending you to CECOT because you got a tan at the beach? Why should they believe you that you have a passport? Why should they bother to check? You're brown and don't belong here. So GTFO.

Eve, Jesse, thank you for your contribution which explains such a lot to me. Not only about Ben, but also about you too.
Please be assured that my use of the word “Liberal”, has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Ben’s sexual orientation. Nor, am I referring to any political views which Ben might subscribe to. I was referring to the post as being not strictly literal or exact. You might prefer the simplicity of the underlying concept of the article was not as obvious as many might believe.
As we are discussing Ben and his blog, one is surprised by his reluctance to comment in person, one has to wonder why.

I think this is a perfectly valid and interesting article. There is absolutely a backlash to this deportation flights. Not perhaps that people with no right to be in the US are being deported per se. But the manner in which it’s happening: have they had due process, are they going to a prison in El Salvador. So Avelo be clearly reacted to that by painting the planes white. I mean why wouldn’t he report on it?

@Ben I disagree with you. Avelo has a legal contract and is deporting people in the US who are not here legally. Except for the whole part where Trump literally did this to legal residents too, not just illegal immigrants. You won't get a payday from a lawsuit, you'll never receive legal counsel and you'll rot in CECOT while the government sits on its thumbs.

Actually wrong. Under Clinton and Bush, most deportees were voluntarily returned, IE the government gave them a date to be out by and they bought tickets and left by then. Obama went the other way, opening immigration court proceedings to forcibly remove people. Obama's approach required court proceedings because these people were detained by the US government. They weren't given INDIVIDUALIZED due process, but that's not what's in question here. The current admin isn't giving detainees due process AT ALL.

I don't think you understand the term "fascism". Fascism means implementing an ideology by force, suspending due process, calling for violence against political opponents, suppression of political opposition by, dictator stuff, attacking the free press. "Fascist liberals" boycotting a private company is called "free market".

Jesse, once again I must apologise for not making myself crystal clear, in other words writing in simple English just for you.
It would appear that you are utterly confused between ‘bullet points’ as in a written text and someone who is, metaphorically speaking, firing bullets for someone else. Or to put it another way, you are answering for Ben, (firing his bullets) when actually he should be responsible for answering for himself, i.e. ‘firing his own bullets’. I sincerely hope that I have made myself understood, yes?
Now Ben, are you ever going to offer me the courtesy of a reply?

The "Janet" flights from KLAS are rather nondescript. Nothing wrong with this. Avelo is doing nothing wrong by accepting a government contract. They could just as easily be transporting other criminals from one jail to another.

Deportation planes are usually all white. You see them off to the sides of the tarmac at major airports. It may be some kind of requirement.

The government deports people not here legally. That's been going on for decades. So what a private business shouldn't get government contracts. Grow up.

And how do you determine if someone is a criminal? You have due process.

Without due process, we just have to take the government word for whether someone is a criminal or not.

@ George Romey -- That's simply not true. See GlobalX, for example (literally featured in Trump's ad, so clearly it's not a government requirement). When American, Delta, and United, performed deportation flights in the past, they didn't repaint their planes.

What "other perspective"? Illegal is...illegal whether it's robbing a bank or entering the United States by sneaking across the border. Children born here are legal citizens by virtue of the Constitution...period. However, if the parent(s) are here illegally, THE PARENTS are illegally in this country. The parent(s) being deported have the option of taking their children with them out of the United States or they can leave them with relatives LEGALLY in the US. If they "self deport", they can apply to come back to the US. If they are deported...they can't come back. Most of the deportees take their kids with them. The kids will always be allowed back.

@Foo, what BZ means is (((Andrew Levy))) and when he says Zionist he means (((globalist))). We've seen this with other posts too, where not only is he so totally singleminded that every single thread allows him to post the same thing, no matter how tangential, but he's moved on from just critizing the war to literally calling any negative thing that happens to involve any Jewish person the fault of a "Zionist." Forgetting even the merits and and demerits of Zionism (which means something different to nearly everyone who says it), BZ finds fault with literally anyone Jewish, initially under cover of indirectly supporting the war, but now that pretense is lifted. If it's bad, a "Zionist" is responsible.

I'm Jewish, and I'm reluctant to invoke the a-s word when there's not actual cause, but that word exists for people like him. There are certainly plenty of Jews who cry a-s when any criticism of Israel is presented, even when perfectly valid, but this is the flipside of the coin -- some people who ostensibly criticize Israel's actions really are expressing their hatred for Jews. Like BZ.

Ben warned him in a previous thread, and now it appears has deleted his comment.

Avelo has to resort to this because the nuts (liberalism is a metal disorder: self destruction) of the woke left might start fire-bombing their planes and attacking Avelo flight crews.

I'm tired of hearing about President Trump not winning the majority of the popular vote etc. He won the election (even as a flawed candidate) period. If he were less character flawed, he would have won 65% of the vote. Not because of the economy, but because of the radical left turn the Democrats took. Plis Biden was in a semi-comatose state, then Harris…..let's not start.

Aren't these the same people who complained about using military aircraft due to cost? BTW: US Airlines can all be mandated to fly military personnel anywhere in the world in time of crisis. Same for the few US flagged ships.

Don't you mean (((globalist)))? When you've got an anti-semitic hammer, everything looks like a malicious Jewish nail. Do you even have any interest in at all aviation, points, or miles? If so, then why is this is literally the only type of comment you ever post, without exaggeration? Why are you so ready to claim anything possibly negative involving anyone Jewish as part of general trend of "Zionist" maliciousness (like the "Zionist" Southwest "activist investor"). You don't mean Zionist. You mean Jew.

You're well entitled to whatever feelings you might have about the war. I in fact have my own. I don't post them here, on a points, miles, and aviation blog.

By contrast, everything you post suggests you think that Bad Things Happen Because of Jews, and Jews Make Bad Things Happen. Do you disagree? It's clearly, for you, not just about the war and the plight of the Palestinian people. It's about your feelings about all of us Jews. It's really ugly and depressing to see.

Porque no los dos? Look, my IT business can be failing, and a corrupt government voted in by dumbasses can say, "hey, can we kick you some change if you just do a little surreptitious data collection on some individuals of interest." And I can say "Fuck you and the horse you rode in on," because what they're asking for is immoral. It's both valid to criticize the morality of the decisionmakers in a company and those of the dumbasses who indirectly empowered them. Avelo just gets more attention because they're a consumer-facing company; we wouldn't be giving them five minutes if they were a typical government contractor, or even a cargo aviation company.

The majority of people Obama deported did NOT have a hearing in front of judge. If they did, those cases would still be going on today. Obama was given carte blanche to deport as many people as he wanted in any manner he wanted because he was Obama and the legacy media NEVER pushed back on this. Which airline did he use?

Dusty, if what you said were accurate, it would mean that there were over 3 million hearings. There weren't as there isn't the capacity in the Immigartion Court system. And truely "voluntary" removal seems pretty unlikely seems unlikely after you've paid a coyote thousands of dollars. While apprehended individuals not proximate to the border or who requested asylum got hearings under Obama, most within close proximity to the border were escorted to a crossing for removal. Now you can argue that these weren't "real" deportations, and Republicans criticized Obama for counting them as "deportations" to please moderate Democrats and swing voters, but there were no hearings in these cases. Unsurprisingly, we didn't hear much about this from a Democrat leaning press till after Obama left office.

Once you have a valid order of deportation, you have had due process. Adios, criminal illegal aliens.

@Win Whitmire
The "other perspective" is that if you detain somebody you believe is here illegally and want to deport them to their home country or rendition them elsewhere, that person has the right to challenge their detention and prove they have a legitimate claim to either be in the US or prevent their deportation.

The facts are that some of the people Trump removed from the US, Abrego Garcia being one, had no criminal record and were here legally. The reason the government knew about them to begin with was because most of those people were going through the immigration system for asylum or other protected status, or recently had done so. For Abrego Garcia specifically, the government attempted to deport him in 2019 but the immigration judge found that he was likely to be killed or forced into the Barrio 18 gang if he was returned. So he was granted protective withholding status, allowing him to stay in the US. It was ILLEGAL for the US to send him to El Salvador. If they wanted to rendition him to a different country, they could have, but they did not. They also ignored a court order by running the deportation flights, as a Federal judge (and a Bush appointee at that, not a liberal judge) ordered the deportation flights turned around so that the detainees could receive due process in court. Hell, Rubio and Noem BRAGGED about it, and then the Trump admin argued that the case was moot because the detainees were "no longer in US jurisdiction" AFTER INTENTIONALLY DEFYING THE COURT ORDER.

With regards to the minor US citizen, she was effectively deported. A Trump-friendly Loouisiana judge ruled that the mother being deported and the minor must be brought before the court before being deported so that the court could confirm that it was the mother's wish for her daughter to accompany her, since the father is a legal resident of the US and wasn't being deported. The government IGNORED this ruling as well, and informed the judge after the plane landed in Honduras that they couldn't comply, despite the ruling being issued long before that point.

Anybody who looks at this objectively will see that the government is not acting in good faith. The government is violating the law as it pertains to giving the people it's detaining the right to challenge that detention, the government is violating multiple laws against cruel and unusual punishment, and the government has violated and continues to violate court orders to provide that to the people it has wronged.

Generally yes because the left has pushed for an expansion of individual rights and more oversight to prevent government abuse of power, while the right has pursued the opposite. We're tired of you trying to turn the US into Russia.

Please quote the US Code or Statute that says the government is allowed to send people to be detained indefinitely in foreign gulag. Last I checked Venezuelans are from Venezuela, not El Salvador.

It’s so sad to learn that a Lucky is pro-Hamas, hates Jews and supports illegal immigrant criminals. Yet he lives in Miami, a non-sanctuary city, largely to benefit from all the positive things that a Republican government can offer. And a city full of the Jews and Israelis that he despises.

The US Supreme Court just backed Trump's removal of 500,000 immigrants that were brought to the US under the previous administration.

Avelo should have plenty of work for a long time to come.

That is not exactly what the Constitution says. It is an interpretation by the SCOTUS, disconnecting two parts. Perhaps correct, maybe not.

The claim that this is borne from shame is without evidence. Of course they want to do these flights, they are earning revenue. It's a separate line of business from pax revenue so it actually makes sense to keep the branding off these flights.

A few commenters talk about citizens being snatched off the streets & deported without due process... again a flimsy claim without evidence. Hey dummies, these illegal aliens have previous deportation orders ... thus they had due process. Spoiler alert, they lost. The current admin feds are simply acting on those orders unlike previous admins who ignored their constitutional duty.

No, that is exactly what the Constitution says, in both text and spirit. In case you forgot the 14th amendment was specifically written to ensure the freed slaves were citizens and not left stateless after the end of the Civil War.

Airline doesn’t want to have liberals at their doorstep complaining.

Put aside the ridiculousness of people being against deporting criminals also…at the end of the day, these people exist and better for business to not give them an excuse to protest your airline

Avelo is moving people from A to B, it’s as simple as that. The same way a package would be moved or any other payload. If they didn’t do it, another company would have. At least Avelo is experienced in caring for passengers. Take some fly by night cargo company, an operator like that would really treat these deportees like cargo. Either way, if you have to place your anger, express anger at the polls. Anger is misplaced by boycotting a transportation company.

Where is Lucky pro-Hamas? His reporting of flights to Israel is always professional, avoiding political opinion. If he ever does get political, it's somewhat critical of Israel's actions, never doubting it's right to exist safely, and surely not pro-Hamas.

Avelo is consciously aiding the Trump administration's illegal deportation flights. It's as simple as that.

These flights are illegal because due process is part of the legal procedure for deporting people in the U.S.. The Trump administration has violated U.S. law and recent Supreme Court rulings with regards to illegal deportations. It's as simple as that.

If Avelo Airlines fails, and the number of promotions it's running indicate things are not hunky dory, it will reinforce the power of standing up to tyranny with effective boycotts. It's as simple as that.

The illegals should be here in the forty place thanks to Biden. Trump is cleaning up the mess and it is expensive. Whether they pain their plans white or black or polka dots, it’s their choice. It’s a private company and they have free will. They are helping clean up America and making money at the same time. That…is capitalism!

So what’s it like on board? Are the passengers shackled and handcuffed? Are there flight attendants on board or are ice agents trained on emergency procedures? I have to imagine there are some waivers from standard procedures. I’m guessing no beverage service.

First, not all of them did as evidenced in multiple court cases. Some of them had applied for asylum and literally had hearings scheduled but were instead immediately deported.

Second, previous admins sent deportees to their home countries. They did not IMPRISON THEM in their home countries or some other foreign country like Libya or Sudan or El Salvador based on specious assertions that they were gang members "invading" the US. And by the way, Biden deported more people in one year alone than Tango Tito did in his entire first term. Educate yourself.

If you read the actual document the ACLU linked, you'd realize that most of those forced removals were of immigrants apprehended at or within 100 miles of the US border, within a week or two of their entry into the country. They were deported under an expedited program persuant to existing US law. Deportees outside of that group generally did have the opportunity to claim asylum/present their case that they may be persecuted on return to their home country. Obama did also run group hearings rather than individualized ones, but that's still better than what Trump is currently doing.

Contrast: Trump is claiming that the Alien Enemies Act gives him the authority to deport anyone he claims is a member of TdA. He's deporting people under this "authority" without ANY due process to determine if the accused people are actually gang members or have committed any crime. They are literally being apprehended and deported based on their tattoos and clothing. They also aren't being "deported", they are being renditioned to foreign prisons. The government CANNOT send somebody to a foreign prison without allowing them to challenge that detention first.

If Trump was just deporting the illegal Venezuelans back to Venezuela without imprisoning them, that's totally legal under US immigration law. Imprisoning them in El Salvador without due process is totally illegal. Do you understand this? I don't think I can break it down any simpler.

Deportation orders let you send the person back to their own country, not a foreign (to the deportee) gulag.

I wonder if this was one or all of the big 3 carriers what people would be saying. Either way someone would take the contract....It is not like they are the only airline doing it and it is not like the government owns planes it can use for this purpose.
