Renderings look nice, but look no further than the reviews of the new Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica for how deceiving they can be.
Seems like a very similar look and vibe to the recently opened St Regis Longboat Key in FL.
With that said Punta Cana I personally wouldnt go for more than a couple days, its mainly a beach/pool relaxation place with not much to do outside the enclosed resort
I try to be open-minded but a) every person I know who has visited the DR has had a horror story of some sort, usually involving theft or robbery (sometimes by hotel employees) and b) I grew up for a time in a very Dominican neighborhood and encountered some of the rudest people on Planet Earth on a regular basis.
Hard pass.
Sure, not at the resort. But just outside the resort, you bet. Went down w/ friends for the cigar expo. Even w/ the benefit of knowing a bunch of fairly prominent families in the area, I was advised not to head out onto the streets w/out protection in midday. And I'm a decently jacked 6'3" male.
TBH I don't understand the brand loyalty StR gets. Every StR experience I've had has been underwhelming and has equally or lesser priced competition in the same town that offers more. Starting to think that StR is just not the brand we're told it is.
In my opinion the Dominican Republican is best experienced on a cruise. The cruise excursions avoid the unsafe parts of the country and show the main highlights. The resorts in the Dominican Republican are great if you want a party vibe (particularly if you are college-aged), but if you are looking for the best beaches or a more relaxed vibe then the far eastern Caribbean (such as Antigua, St. Barth's, or Anguilla), the Bahamas, or the Turks and Caicos is probably a better fit for you.
Cap Cana is most definitely not the same as the all-inclusives. It’s very laid back, not the college scene at all.
Cruises miss Las Terrenas and Bahia de las Aguilas and obviously anything inland.
It’s also not particularly unsafe in any of the tourist areas or most of Santo Domingo. I’m more wary of PR and Barcelona tbh.

It's a lovely place, and the food is great (not at all-inclusives).
There are plenty of unsafe places everywhere, DR is no different, and if you eat garbage from questionable places, expect to not feel well - anywhere in the world.
I've lived there 50 years and never been 'poisoned'. Not once.
It's also nonsense that you need protection to wander around at midday, and certainly not in a resort.
The only thing to really worry about in DR is driving, chaotic during the day, and just do not do it at night, especially on the highway.
As with any poorer country, don't flash your stuff and you'll be fine.
As far as Cap Cana is concerned, it's basically not even the DR if you stay inside the truly enormous complex. It's a little far from the rest of Punta Cana for my taste, but if you're going to stay in CC, it's perfectly fine.
That said, for the same 800-1300 bucks a night (or less) you can rent a large villa with 3-4 br and a chef.
I'd never stay at StR, even as a Titanium.

This is very different than most of the rest of DR. Cap Cana is a very large and much more upscale (and private) complex. I'm not a big DR fan (though the beaches are spectacular), but this actually does look like a very nice addition and totally safe. Between this and the renovations of Tortuga Bay (the OG down there), it could be a great option for a very easy vacation, especially if you love golf and tennis.
"Brand" is a thing that property owners lease. Brand standards are not strictly enforced. Program standards are not strictly enforced. A hundred years ago, when the Astor Family owned the name, it meant something . . . but not today.
Really? You might want to give some a chance outside of N America.
The St Regises in Italy, Thailand, Maldives, Mexico City are all wonderful.
