China Plans To Sell Waldorf Astoria New York At A Loss, After Huge Renovation
In 2025, the Waldorf Astoria New York reopened after an eight-year renovation (I recently stayed, and shared my thoughts), which ran five years behind schedule and more than $1 billion over budget. Now the property’s owners are looking to sell, almost certainly at a significant loss.

Does that mean they’re preparing for Taiwan? Like, sell what you have, so that, when you do a horrible-thing, we can’t seize your property? Did Russia do the same before February 2022? Call me Tucker, I’m ‘just asking questions’…
That being the case 1990Bot, what is the Adolf ‘rump going to dispose of before invading Greenland and Canada? Florida perhaps?
Trump doesn't have the stomach to fight for Taiwan against separatist forces in the mainland. The Republic of China was established long before separatist forces took the mainland in 1949, yet the separatists keep accusing Taiwan of being separatists.
It is funny how many properties and businesses in the USA and Europe Chinese "companies" own.
It's only a matter of time before Taiwan is annexed. I would estimate within the next two years.
Nevermind that China owns nearly $700 billion in US Treasury instruments that can be seized.
Until the CCP bought the hotel, the US ambassador to the UN had the penthouse suite as their official diplomatic residence. I believe this was also the hotel that every US president stayed at when visiting New York. The US moved out because of spying concerns. It will be interesting to see if they move back now.
I like your style, Jack.
That’s one way to manage the national debt… ‘and… it’s gone!’
Yeah, maybe their entire purchase and renovation and now sale was just so they could bug the entire place…
Be sure to go full-Borat-sexytime when you stay!
Good riddance...
I hope CPP will have to go ahead with similar "deals" elsewhere...
Successfully annexed I don't think so. China doesn't currently have enough ships to ferry the amount of equipment and soldiers for an occupation and that won't change in two years. Could they make Taiwan's life hell, sure. But i think a long drawn out war would be economic suicide for China due to Taiwan's near monopoly on semiconductors.
I expected more early lunacy from the idiot mayor of NYC. Maybe he'll buy this for public housing.
Hope this beautiful, classy hotel remains top-notch, I was lucky enough to enjoy a free night thanks to Hilton Aspire Card and will be returning this summer
If you think that’s bad, wait until you find out how much property the dirty Qataris own around the world. The Saudis aren’t shy about flashing their money around, either.
bingo.
inflating your currency away is also a bad thing with real world consequences...say what clan has been in charge of the fed reserve this whole time? who controls the white house behind the scenes?
more on that post-ww3.
A $4B hotel development is Dubai-style spending. That's crazy even for Manhattan.
That would be enough said about you, Pete. A "low information" right-winger who's never been closer to NYC than his mom's basement, I expect?
Zeek, I hate to tell you this but the PRC has *a lot* of sealift. Nearly all of their RO-RO ferries they built for coastal transportation are dual-use. They have the interior space to accommodate armored vehicles, and they have a consistent history of getting pulled off their routes for Taiwan wargames with the PLAN. The PRC has also been building Mulberry-like portal harbors to allow these ships to offload vehicles and trips to an established beachhead, same as we did in Normandy France in 1944.
I don't think their current bottleneck is moving troops. I think their current bottleneck is lack of missile stockpiles, lack of aircraft capable of going toe-to-toe with the F-35, and lack of surface naval combatants. As it is, if the US steps in during an invasion the best possible outcome for the PRC is a pyrrhic victory, and at worst a crushing defeat. In another decade though, the calculations will have shifted if we can't get our Burke/Tico replacement programs sorted out and still can't build a frigate to save our lives.
