Yesterday, I got an e-mail from TPG with a link to flash sale of Hilton Honors points at 125% bonus. The offer was valid for just 4 hours between 12:00 and 4:00 PM.
I stopped reading TPG when he banned reader comments a few years back. The comments are often the best part of any article.
I'm not sure the 0.05/point valuation is still there (don't know if Lucky/Ben has re-evaluated recently). Frequent Miler just did another data analysis (like in the last 2 weeks) that pulled data from a huge amount of actual redemptions and the median value is somewhere closer to $0.04/point or slightly less.
As always YMMV (ie: special "high-end" redemptions IF coupled with the 5th night free, etc.)
Yeah, Hilton points values have become like IHG... not great.
Best value around with Hilton is still the uncapped FNC via Aspire card.
(Ugh, but then you'd be directly/indirectly supporting those corporate shills over at TPG...)

Love your blog- but how can you keep the points valuation the same across multiple devaluations? That does your readers a disservice.
Frequent miler has done a great job calculating the value by looking at almost all available redemptions. The 90th percentile value of redemptions is noticeably less than .5 cents. Sure there are exceptions but not if you don’t have tremendous flecibilty. Also the value is highest in aspirational properties, not many can afford that.

100% I don't take the valuations this site seriously. FM's takes a fairly scientific approach rather than picking some value and never changing it.
Ben is the best when it comes to reviews tho
YMMV, but to me buying points only makes sense if you need to top up your account ahead of booking a stay, especially if you are booking 5 nights and can get the 5th night free
I just did this last sale to top-off and book the Nobu in Marrakesh. On it's own it wasn't a great deal (compared to the room rate), but it did allow me to have a 5th night free booking, which made it worth it.
I bought some points at this price about 18 months ago, and I still have some left. It is all too common that all of their hotels in a particular market have cash prices that are lower than the points price. Occasionally the fifth night free will make it worth it, but not often enough to tempt me to buy more.
I just burned some HHonors points on a five night stay at the Hotel Astoria, Vienna. Although it was far from the best hotel I've ever stayed at, it was excellently managed, comfortable, and ideally located. I got about 0.9¢ per point value, which I felt was solid for a good hotel in Vienna's first district during the peak of the summer season.
I'm a Lifetime Diamond and have watched the Hilton program go from the best value out there (I also have status on Marriott and IHG) to the worst insofar as point earning and redemption go (still the best upgrades but only when staying international - an upgraded room domestically is pretty much just a better view of the parking lot). The old Going Global got you a week at an international Conrad for 100K points...now the same Conrad is over that for just one day. Just spent two nights at a Salt Lake City Hilton and got a misery 4000 points. The program doesn't drive behavior anymore.
100% bonus has been the norm for a while now across most of the big chains. With all the devaluations I've been wondering when/if we'd start to push higher.
