Hi Ben!

I was living in ATL when Valuejet started. I believe flight deck crew were not paid if they didn’t complete the day.

This doesn’t answer this question, but a lot of good numbers to compare from 1996 vs other airline costs. Interesting tidbit from the article, United paid $5 for every 1000 miles flown per Pax towards food!

Didn't mean to hijack the thread 🙂

Would love if you would consider making a more spreadsheet style comparison with all those numbers, would really increase the overview:)

Fair? Are you kidding me?
You get what you pay for.
Most us pilots at the main three /southwest are navy pilots...
OH well, cheap gets cheap.

Their pay is low, but heck, it’s just another startup.

I think you need to dig a little deeper into how pilots earn pay. I can’t speak for their work rules (if they have any), but I can tell you at a Legacy carrier I can get 1000 hours of pay without flying 1000 hours. Deadheads, duty rigs, vacation, training, profit sharing, premium pay trips etc make it much more complex than just multiplying hourly rate x hours flown to calculate annual pay.

It's really tough for the pilots to get extra pay if they don't have a contract. Also, what happens when there's a questionable maintenance issue or poor weather and the pilots don't feel it's safe to fly? They can be fired at will. As usual, you get what you pay for.
