250 Avios Per Dollar Spent On Kate Spade Purchases (Avios Now Posting?)

I’m trying… any item I place in the cart has a highlighted message saying “Excluded from Promotion.” Not sure if this is generic referring to discount codes people may have, or this particular discount as arrived at via logging in from BA’s shopping portal. Anyone know?

I thought about it, but decided against it. BA will almost certainly walk this back - too easy under US law to say you made a mistake, even with all the screenshots as evidence. I’d want to spend $5-10k to make it worthwhile. I agree, if you live near KS then it’s a shot to nothing, but it’s possible posting might take longer than the return policy allows. And it’s not clear under US law that BA couldn’t still claim a mistake (harder if they post the Avios but still possible). It took me over a year to get BA to pay a watertight EU261, so will be shocked if they pay out - unless they close it up when the UK wakes up and sees this posted in the morning and only a few take advantage. The AA case was different for many reasons. I would avoid the items that say excluded from promotion.

I tried to do a pickup order as I figured if they don't honor on the deal, I just wont pickup. But it wouldn't go through on checkout, it just kept failing with no error message. So i did a delivery order in the end. Probably will just have to return them (made sure none were final sale) but worth a punt. Worst case I waste an hour returning them at local mall. Best case I get 300k avios for $1000 and can resell the items for hopefully $300-$500.

Actually, I should have stated that more expensive items ($200+) showed excluded, not like cheaper necklaces. What did you buy that

Almost decided to jump in (since items are available for local pickup), but ran some numbers and - meh.
So, I can get a few handbags for a total of $850 ($900 including tax). That will net 212K miles.

Quick search (never used Avios) shows a TATL business class ticket for 104K avios + $400. So, For $900 + 2 x $400 = $1700 I can (may be) get a business class TATL r/t ticket (that in itself earns no miles) on BA.

Might be able to get $200 back by selling the bags on ebay (a quick search shows a glut of offerings of "new in box" Kate Spade merchandise on ebay at list prices less than 40% of the retail).

That is all pretty close to a cash price, and does not seem to make much sense to me.

BA is not the only portal currently offering unusually high rates per $ for Kate Spade. For example, Wyndham Rewards is offering 190 points per $, Virgin Atlantic is offering 152 points per $, and JetBlue is offering 126.5 points per $.

I would absolutely go for this but it keeps redirecting me to Kate Spade in Australia even with location services off

Just pulled the trigger on the offer. Spent $2086 x 250 avios is 521,500. Averages out to 0.004 cents per Avios. Worst case if they cancel the offer, we all get together and form a class action lawsuit.

Yeah, while true the value isn't in using it on BA awards but on partner awards. AA, Finnair, Cathay, Latam, etc are much better usages.

The base value is that you are paying .4 cents for let's say 1cent value points. While the value of redeeming on BA for TATL is suspect due to the fees (and you must be east coast based for such low fees), at least you got the points at half price more or less. Not counting the lack of mileage earning, usually paying $2000 or so for TATL r/t is a pretty good cash deal, and hear you can pay only half for one way. Then you have intra-europa and AA/AS redemption opportunities, so the points can go a long way.

Worst, excluded specifically per the T&C's, so a double whammy!!

If you don't actively use avios already I wouldn't bother tbh. But I will say like all FF programs you have to learn their sweet spots. The real value of avios is not in long haul business redemptions, the taxes and fees they charge, esp on TATL flights, make it a terrible deal.

The real value of avios are in short to medium haul redemptions, esp within Europe, but also within Asia and North America. They have RFS pricing in Europe which caps the taxes and fees at a low rate (about $20 per one way economy flight). Availability is usually good and is very handy for flying to and from the UK short haul, esp at short notice.

In for $1150 worth of handbags... we'll see what happens, but two multi-carrier 120k or 140k J awards would definitely be worthwhile if this pans out, even with the requisite taxes that BA inevitably will charge.

To add some color - I have probably booked 20+ BA short haul Europe flights in past 5 years for ~7k avios and $20 in taxes one way economy, or $15k avios and $30 taxes in business, when the cash price for these flights is often $400+.

Might not be useful for many but for me it is incredibly useful FF program for shorthaul flights in Europe (also with Cathay and JAL in Asia)

Anyone know how long it typically takes to get the points? I pulled the trigger on $1000, the US portal has an option to ship to Canada which was nice. Transferring the points to Qatar gets me a nice one way from MEL - YUL next year or a few transatlantic on Iberia.

It's dumb for a different reason - it's not eligible for the avios.

Usually takes 5 days to see as pending, and ~35 days to post.

Went for it. Have zero experience with the avios shopping portal but took the usual shopping portal precautions ( new browser profile with no extensions or plug-ins, clicked through once, added items to the cart, went back to the portal, clicked through to then buy). Made sure to screen record the purchase and pick returnable items. Fingers crossed now!

Well, I'd say a LOT of the value is long haul biz or first, just not on BA.

212K means 1 r/t+ 1 one-way long haul on QR, but let's call it 2.5. $600 + $900 means $1500 for ~30 hours in biz total? No brainer.

If they renege on this offer then you are stuck with a gift card that you might only get 50% resale for. Better to buy something returnable.

True I just flew from LAX to DUB with Aer Lingus for 62k avios in business and $150 in taxes.

You can't add things to your card and checkout is locked, at least for me.

I did this too. Bought returnable items just in case. 0.4 cents per Avios point is too good to pass up, plus it is helping me meet a welcome bonus soend on my Alaska Atmos card. And Kate Spade does have some nice stuff - I’ve bought them before as gifts for female friends and family members. Seems like a win-win! But I have never used the BA shopping portal before, so we shall see what happens!

None seem to pull up in Cashbackmonitor but Evrewards shows certain stipulations on this. For example JetBlue is instore only. I was shocked to see Melia Rewards (hotel chain) at 615x which is shocking if it works out.

It's some other kind of promotion. If you go to the website in another browser without any link to the BA Portal the "Excluded from Promotion" is still there.

We shop there a lot and only get a confirmation email 1/2 the time. Beware sometimes they take the points back without a good explanation too.

It can take up to 6 weeks to appear. Check your recent transaction on your Avios account.

Gave it a shot. Sent $1,006 to my parents house in Alaska… so no tax since it seems like the bonus points don’t count on that. Used capital one card so get 2,012 points there. I am visiting later this month and either resell or return back in my home state based if they honor it. 251,500 avios points can get me from The US to Africa nearly 3 one ways in QSuites… that’s a steal especially if I can make back even 25% resell!

Yes it is normal. It should appear in the purchase history within few days as pending, and paid within 45 days (if they honor it at all). If it does not show up in the history you can claim it as missing purchase and you will need to provide all order details and screenshots. Hopefully they will honor it, although I have my doubts.

Thanks for this! And yeah, I’d be on the hook for the shipping back (and here I imagine), but a reasonable gamble for this amount of points. I have a lot of use for avios and being in Canada never get Amex transfer bonuses so this is huge.

The excluded from promotion was not for the BA offer. It’s something else. As I made sure I logged on from a different non connected browser without having click the link and showed the same message. I think that was for the 15% discount. Which you also needed to avoid as per the terms and conditions at BA.

I just got my email that my $398 purchase is pending for 1,592 Avios, so 4x vs 250x. I am kicking myself for buying something that wasn’t refundable but at least I got a nice leather backpack

After submitting the dispute form, they say that it may take 28 days to respond due to high volume. So that is right up against the deadline to return the items.

Submitted a missing Avios claim. It did have Kate Spade for the merchant (and no other named merchants) and January 3 for the date date (and not other specific dates) in the drop down menu as an option. Not sure what to make of that exactly, but obviously BA is well aware of the situation. My assumption is that they will try to claim it was an obvious mistake fare type of thing and say sorry but too bad.
