My dad's 141,977 AAdvantage miles expired, and American wanted $1,000 to reinstate them. Then I learned about a much cheaper challenge that gets the miles back.

I had this happen with Hyatt points earlier this year for a family member that I manage accounts for. Wondering if there is a similar option there?

@ Ben -- Keep $100 in a Bask AA-mileage earning account. The linked AAdvantage account will stay current automatically since the Bask account earns a tiny bit of miles each month.

Every year - book an award flight then immediately cancel. If you do a domestic Japan flight, there are $0 taxes and fees and it's about 5000 to 7500 miles.
