This shows that places like Quality Inn, Rodeway Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, all have refrigerators but not the grand Empress Hotel. Sometimes, riff raff is better!

When i read this yesterday on the BBC i had to check the date twice to see if it was from April 1st. This is pure comedy right there. I've read the story a couple of times and can't stop laughing.

I stayed in the Empress in the late 90s...at that point, it could be considered a dump, as it hadn't been renovated in 30+ years. It was still "classic" in the common spaces, but the rooms had seen much better days, so I can definitely vouch for the lack of fridges or proper A/C in the hotel. Since CP sold over to Fairmont, the whole place has been renovated, so hopefully no one ever has an incident like this again due to lack of refridgeration, haha.

Brings back memories of when it was the Canadian Pacific Dumpstress. I was a tour guide through the Canadian Rockies and Alaska, and spent many nights there on tour. Who needed central heating with the original water radiators heating the rooms, the expansion of heated metal providing a sleep soundtrack of ticking and clinking all night.
Ahh...he good old days. BSH and CLL in Alberta were in similar shape before early 90s remodels.
Haha I have stayed at the Empress and it sure is a prim and proper English snotty hotel. I would stay there again if in Victoria as right on harbor and have wonderful trips to see orcas in Zodiac boats.
I can believe the seagull story as when in Westin in Vancouver, I had a seagull come to my windowsill on 20th (don't remember exactly) floor and I fed it each day out the window.
Never thought I'd say this, but I agree with @Debit on this one. Would be a great contributor to the blog....if he knew anything about travel / loyalty.

Wasn't he required to pay for the damage and the cleaning? I'd be surprised if somehow he weren't liable, given all the small print we sign off on when dealing with hotels. Wouldn't this be considered "unreasonable" or "beyond normal use" wear and tear?
WOW...& I thought accidentally dropping mouthwash from my bathroom window at the Fairmont San Francisco onto the Tony Bennett statue 5 floors down caused a stir!
Just happened upon this now. Thank you for using my letter to lift people's spirits. The event wasn't too funny at the time but in the re-telling I soon learned to laugh at myself. To be honest. This isn't even my worst travel story 🙂
I have yet to discuss the story of the dead man's pants.
Travel has its challenges.
