We travel hundreds of thousands of miles per year, and much of that travel is international. While abroad, we love the ability to use credit cards just as we do at home in the US, reaping valuable rewards from all of our spending. Even if you only travel internationally once per year, it makes sense that you’d want to look for the best no foreign transaction fee credit card to help make your travel more affordable. The average charge for foreign transactions is around 3%, so a family of four spending $5,000 on hotels, food and drinks in Europe for a weeklong summer vacation could otherwise find themselves paying an extra $150 in fees!

Before we dive in to each suggestion, here are some extra tips when deciding not only which credit card is right for you, but also when and how to use that card when traveling abroad:

  1. Always pay in local currency. You’ll typically be asked if you want to pay in local currency or your home currency. While it may seem counterintuitive, paying in local currency will get you a better exchange rate every time. This is different from the actual foreign transaction fee (which is waived for all of these cards), and is just the conversion rate that the banks use.
  2. Different processing networks handle fees differently. Visa guarantees the exchange rate the day you make the purchase, but has a built-in cushion since the transaction typically only posts a couple of days later (meaning exchange rates could change and otherwise there’s some risk for Visa). Mastercard charges the current exchange rate the day the transaction posts (often a couple of days after the transaction), so the cushion is much smaller.
  3. Enable contactless payments. For several years Chip + PIN cards had the advantage for overseas travel. Nowadays, most merchants outside the U.S. (including many train and subway kiosks) allow tap-to-pay on your mobile device. This can streamline your purchases, and provides an extra layer of security.

In the past, very few cards waived foreign transaction fees — and those that did were usually super-premium cards with high annual fees. Nowadays, a variety of cards offer this benefit. Here are the best no foreign transaction fee credit cards of July 2020:

Best Credit Card Offers with No Foreign Transaction Fee (2020)

Overall, and if you’re not looking for a card that earns travel rewards, and want to avoid paying annual fees (more on those options below), your best bet for a credit card with no foreign transaction fee is the Capital One® SavorOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card. This card has no annual fee, and charges no foreign transaction fees (a feature of every Capital One card, by the way!). While you can’t turn these rewards into airline miles, the card is still rewarding for spend, as it offers 3% cash back on dining and entertainment, 2% cash back at grocery stores, and 1% cash back on all other purchases. When traveling abroad, it’s safe to assume that a significant number of your expenses will qualify as dining and entertainment. So, not only does this card save you up to 3% fee that other cards levy, but you can then earn quite a bit in cashback.

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards Visa® credit card is a great alternative, and also has no annual fee. If you don’t spend a significant amount on dining, entertainment and groceries, this card could be more compelling since it offers a flat 1.5 points per dollar for every purchase. If you happen to be a Bank of America Preferred Rewards member, this card can get even more lucrative by offering 25% – 75% more points on every purchase. Earning anywhere from 1.875% to 2.625% on non-bonused spend for a no annual fee card is very impressive.

If you only travel internationally once or twice a year, your goal may be quite simple: eliminate the need to pay an extra 1% – 3% in foreign transaction fees during your travels. This is a relatively simple goal to achieve, and there’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars on annual fees to accomplish it! Here are the best credit card offers with no foreign transaction fees:

Best Travel Credit Card Offers with No Foreign Transaction Fee (2020)

I remember back in the day when it was rare for a card not to have foreign transaction fees. The fact that a card didn’t have foreign transaction fees was reason enough to use it for purchases abroad. Nowadays you have all kinds of great credit cards that not only have no foreign transaction fees, but offer other benefits for purchases abroad. These usually come with at least a small annual fee, but the increased points earning quickly offsets those costs for frequent travelers.

Whether you value rewards for spending abroad, or coverage when travel goes awry, you have many options to choose from. Many of these cards do carry an annual fee and have constantly changing introductory offers that can also influence your decision. We keep this page up to date, so here are the best travel rewards credit cards with no foreign transaction fee:
