The best travel rewards credit cards and the credit cards with the biggest sign-up bonuses typically have at least a moderate annual fee. After all, those amazing perks have to get paid for somehow!

In many cases, however, it doesn’t make sense to pay an annual fee. Whether that’s because you’re looking for a no-fee card to supplement other cards in your wallet, want to try out a rewards program before upgrading to a fee card, or are just managing your yearly expenses, there are lots of reasons to consider a card without an annual fee. As a bonus, the lack of an annual fee means you don’t have to decide whether or not the card is worth the cost year after year.

Best No Annual Fee Credit Card Offers (July 2020)

Many no annual fee credit cards offer their rewards as cash-back or a statement credit. Some of the bank credit cards allow you to earn points towards travel or other rewards, or let you merge your points with those earned on other cards. There are even a few airline and hotel credit cards that let you earn points in their programs without paying an annual fee!

With so many different options, you’ll want to thoughtfully consider your travel goals. If you anticipate mostly domestic or economy travel, the savings from a cash back credit card will probably add up more quickly. International and premium cabin travelers should consider accumulating travel rewards points for those outsized redemptions. Regardless, here are the best credit cards available with no annual fee:

If you think you may eventually want to step up to a premium card, consider that both Chase and Citi offer great no annual fee cards that would allow you to combine the points you’ve earned with an upgraded card in future. This can increase the value of your points exponentially, and is a great approach for those just getting started with rewards programs.

Keeping a no-annual fee card long-term is a great way to increase the average age of your credit accounts, which is a key factor in maintaining a good credit score. Regardless of whether you’re earning cash back or travel rewards, you’ll be getting a greater return on your spending plus better purchase protection than if you were using cash or a debit card.
