Updated: 5 days ago

Credit card welcome bonuses are the easiest way to rack up tens of thousands of miles, and we say that having been in the miles and points game for a long time, and after doing all sorts of complicated things to earn miles (our favorite is still when Ben, as a teenager with a head full of hair, went to a hair loss clinic for a restoration consult in exchange for 10,000 miles).

Rather than jumping through hoops, these introductory offers are straightforward, and mainly require you to spend a certain amount on the card in a designated time-frame. These offers can be worth hundreds of dollars, and are often only available for a limited time. The largest bonuses typically come from travel credit cards, especially those linked with the loyalty programs of airlines and hotels, but general-purpose travel cards and bank credit cards can be incredibly lucrative as well. Bonuses on cash back credit cards are usually a bit lower, hovering in the range of $100 to $150, but several cards offer incentives of $200 for personal cards or up to $500 for business cards.

How OMAAT picks the best offers

Each month we look at the top travel and rewards credit cards on the market, and compare the various offers using a simple two-step methodology:

  1. First we establish a dollar amount for the welcome bonus, which we determine by multiplying the points offered in the introductory offer by the value of those miles or points. A bonus offering 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, for example, would be worth ~$700 using this method, because we value those points at ~0.7¢ each.
  2. Then we subtract the cost of any annual fees. Some cards waive the annual fee for the first year as part of the welcome bonus, in which case there is nothing to subtract. Other times, you’ll want to factor in the fees you’re paying in order to earn the rewards, as that obviously impacts the overall value of the card for the first year.

The great thing about this technique is that it works even if you value miles differently (just plug in your own valuation instead).

We try and include all the best travel rewards cards, regardless of if they pay us a commission or not, and update this list at least once per month.

Best Travel Credit Cards with Bonus Miles (2020)

We’re constantly asked what the best travel credit cards are for earning bonus miles or bonus points at a given moment in time. To be honest, there isn’t a blanket card that covers every possible situation perfectly — having a solid understanding of your travel goals and the miles or points required for your dream trip is always preferable — but if you don’t have set plans yet, or aren’t sure what direction you want to take, there are several fantastic options that will start you out on the right foot no matter what.

Understanding miles versus points

One of the most confusing aspects of travel credit cards is understanding the difference between “miles” versus “points”.  The reality is that the terms are more or less interchangeable these days, so it comes down to which program you’re using, and the words their marketing team has chosen. For example:

  1. Many airlines no longer award miles based on the miles flown; instead, you earn a certain number of miles based on the price you paid for your ticket.
  2. Similarly, airline award charts either have fixed mileage costs determined by zones and regions, or variable pricing based on what it would cost to buy the ticket; the number of airline miles needed for a “free” flight isn’t necessarily correlated to the distance you’ll be covering on your trip, so [insert circumference of globe] airline miles probably won’t get you a round-the-globe ticket.
  3. Because of this, some airlines have given up on using the word “miles” altogether, and refer to their loyalty currency as “points”.
  4. Meanwhile, bank rewards programs are all over the place, with some using “points” and others using “miles”, even when the programs work roughly the same way; Capital One, for example, markets their cards as earning “Miles”, while American Express uses “Points” but both allow their rewards currency to be redeemed for a statement credit, or transferred to a partner.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter whether you’re earning “points” or “miles” — the ways in which the loyalty rewards can actually be used are a more important distinction than the vocabulary choice.

With that as background, here are the best travel credit cards with bonus miles:

If you make frequent transactions in a month the Amex EveryDay cards are a great option. In addition to accruing points in bonus categories, these cards offer an additional incentive based on how many times the card is used in a month. This can be quite lucrative, especially as these cards accrue Membership Rewards points. Membership Rewards points can be transferred to airline partners for the best value, or used to pay for all or part of your flight, prepaid hotel, vacation or cruise through amextravel.com.

What Is The Best Credit Card For Points?

Now, if you aren’t sure how you’ll want to use your rewards, the best credit card for points is going to be one that earns flexible rewards. That way you can choose whether to redeem your points for a statement credit, transfer them to an airline partner, or any number of other options down the road.

While there are advanced strategies for combining points from multiple cards and otherwise maximizing the points you earn on every purchase, if you’re just starting out we think a simple approach is best. These are the best points cards from Chase, American Express, Capital One, and Citi, each of which allows you to directly redeem points towards the cost of travel or transfer them to a loyalty partner for even greater rewards (think international first and business class flights!):

Which Credit Card Has The Most Rewards?

If you’re looking for the credit card with the most rewards, look no further than the Citi Premier℠ Card. We like this card for the combination of the excellent welcome bonus, the broad bonus categories (travel includes fuel!), and the ability to transfer points to a partner program, or easily redeem them through the ThankYou Portal.

Earning 4X Membership Rewards® for small business expenses is an awesome return, and we especially like that it automatically applies to the categories you use most in a billing cycle, rather than having to choose just one or two each year.

  1. I want to apply for these cards,I have an annual income of 80000$.but i am not a us citizen. I am an indian and currently working in a fortune 500 company in usa. I have SSN number, so can i apply for these credit cards. Is there anything else that i need?

  2. Right now I think the most useful comparison factor which could be added is how the travel insurance works for example in a pandemic. Friends have told me that CSR denied their claim because Covid is an act of God. This while the US State Department has prohibited Americans from traveling ie a Level 4 alert. Travel insurance is touted by the premium cards. An article on how it actually is working would be welcomed.
