Avianca is the flag carrier of Colombia, and offers the most extensive route network of any airline in Latin America. While most of us may not fly Avianca regularly, their frequent flier program, LifeMiles, is still a fan favorite. Whether you often redeem miles for Star Alliance flights across the world or if you travel frequently to Latin America, it makes sense that you’d want to find the best credit cards for earning Avianca LifeMiles and other benefits.

Best Avianca LifeMiles Promotions of April 2020

Before diving in specifically on how to earn the most LifeMiles, you may be wondering why you’d even want a healthy stash of LifeMiles in the first place. LifeMiles offer perhaps the most cost-effective, reasonable redemption rates for premium cabin international travel from the US. And, best of all, these redemptions are free of dreaded fuel surcharges. For example:

  • US to Europe in business class costs 63,000 miles
  • US to Europe in first class costs 87,000 miles
  • US to Southeast Asia in business class costs 78,000 miles
  • US to North Asia in first class costs 90,000 miles

LifeMiles can also come in handy for short-haul domestic US flights when they’re otherwise quite expensive. Depending on the zone you’re traveling in, a domestic flight on United (Avianca’s Star Alliance partner) can cost as little as 7,500 LifeMiles.

Even better, when you’re ready to redeem miles, there may be a LifeMiles promotion as well! These award ticket sales can reduce the cost of your trip by up to 30%.

If you’re interested in earning LifeMiles directly, you have two credit cards available to you. Both the Avianca Vida Visa® Card and the Avianca Vuela Visa® Card are exclusively issued by Banco Popular, out of Puerto Rico. Each card has a separate welcome bonus, but you can typically expect to earn tens of thousands of bonus LifeMiles when you’re approved for an Avianca credit card and meet the minimum spending requirements. These offers change from time to time, but OMAAT keeps this page updated as the deals and offers fluctuate. In general the more premium Avianca Vuela Visa® Card (with a higher annual fee), will offer more introductory miles, and better ongoing benefits if you actually fly Avianca, but either one could be a good option depending on your circumstances. Here are the best Avianca credit card offers available today:

How To Earn The Most LifeMiles

If ever there were a frequent flier program with a seemingly endless number of ways to earn miles, Avianca LifeMiles would have to be the winner. Thanks to a wide range of LifeMiles promotions and Avianca partners, you have several excellent opportunities to maximize your LifeMiles earnings. This can all help make any dream trip closer to becoming a reality!

For most everyday credit card spending, there are some very attractive cards available, aside from the Avianca co-branded cards, that allow you to earn the most LifeMiles. That’s because LifeMiles is a transfer partner of 4 of the 5 major transferable currencies, including American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One, Citi ThankYou, and Marriott Bonvoy. This gives you options across some of the most rewarding credit cards in the market. Depending which transferable currency you decide on, you can expect to earn bonuses like:

  • 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines
  • 4X points at restaurants
  • 4X points at U.S. supermarkets

Arguably the coolest feature of this new card is Citi will round up your purchase to the nearest 10 ThankYou points. Make a $1 purchase? You’ll earn 10 ThankYou points. Make an $11 purchase? Why we like this card

The way I view it, this is a card that’s worth holding onto for the anniversary free night certificate, valid at a hotel that retails for up to 35,000 Marriott points per night. That benefit alone should more than justify the annual fee.

If you make frequent transactions in a month the Amex EveryDay cards are a great option. In addition to accruing points in bonus categories, these cards offer an additional incentive based on how many times the card is used in a month. This can be quite lucrative, especially as these cards accrue Membership Rewards points. Membership Rewards points can be transferred to airline partners for the best value, or used to pay for all or part of your flight, prepaid hotel, vacation or cruise through amextravel.com.

Lastly, if you find your LifeMiles balance just a bit short, it can make sense to purchase LifeMiles outright. Thankfully, Avianca often runs sales on purchasing miles, with special bonuses for OMAAT readers. Even better, Avianca is one of the few airlines that processes mile purchases directly, meaning this another great opportunity to maximize your earnings with one of the above credit cards that gives bonus points on airfare.

Avianca LifeMiles Partners and Benefits

Thanks to an abundance of Avianca miles partners and a portfolio of Avianca LifeMiles credit cards, this is a program that can’t be ignored. Here are some of those benefits that you won’t want to miss whether you’re a frequent Avianca flier, or just trying to collect the most LifeMiles:

  1. Access to Star Alliance Redemptions — Avianca is in the Star Alliance, which means you can redeem LifeMiles on all partner airlines. With over 1,000 destinations in almost every country, LifeMiles can quite literally take you across the world!
  2. Earn Bonus Miles on Avianca Purchases — Both Avianca cards offer bonus miles for purchases made directly with Avianca.
  3. No Foreign Transaction Fees — We’d recommend other cards for international travel, but if you happen to use your Avianca Visa Vuela overseas, you won’t pay an extra fee.
  4. Travel Discounts — The Avianca cards are not the most rewarding for significant spend each year, but there are several perks available to those who use their card frequently. Once you spend $12,000 in a calendar year on the Avianca Visa Vuela card, you’ll earn a 50% discount on an award ticket for travel to Central America from the US. If you spend another $12,000 in a calendar year, you will earn an additional 50% discount certificate.
  5. Premium Cabin Award Redemptions — LifeMiles offers one of the best programs for international premium cabin award redemptions. This includes 87,000 one-way First Class redemptions from the US to Europe with no fuel surcharges, on one of my favorite airlines.
  6. Promo Awards — LifeMiles is one of the few frequent flier programs to offer significant discounts off award flights, through their award sale.
  7. Elite Benefits — If you actually fly Avianca on a regular basis, some of their elite benefits can go a long way to making flying more enjoyable. Every elite member receives unlimited upgrades to Business Class on most routes (excludes Europe) when you purchase eligible fares. These upgrades clear either at the airport or 48 hours before the flight. In addition, top-tier Diamond elite members receive 2 upgrade certificates per year that clear in advance.
  8. Flexibility on Elite Status — Once the norm of many loyalty programs, LifeMiles still allows you to rollover miles/segments each year (up to 25,000 miles or 30 segments) to help make qualifying next year that much more attainable. They also allow their elite members to extend their elite status period while on maternity leave, preserving their hard-earned elite benefits.

So, which is the best credit card for Avianca LifeMiles? It really depends on your situation! The good news is you don’t have to limit yourself to just one.
