Avianca Launching Bogota To Tampa Flights, Plus Other Florida Routes

3

As someone who grew up in Tampa, I’ve enjoyed seeing the airport continue to grow over the years, and I like to keep tabs on what’s going on there. While I don’t usually cover individual short and medium haul international route additions, here’s one that I find to be pretty cool.

I first wrote about this a couple of weeks ago, but would like to provide an update, as the flights are now on sale, meaning the schedule has also been published (thanks to AeroRoutes for flagging this).

Avianca adds Bogota to Tampa flights as of March 2025

As of March 31, 2025, Avianca plans to add a new 4x weekly, year-round flight between Bogota (BOG) and Tampa (TPA). The route will operate with the following schedule on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays:

AV194 Bogota to Tampa departing 7:15AM arriving 12:15PM
AV195 Tampa to Bogota departing 2:15PM arriving 5:10PM

Avianca plans to use an Airbus A320neo for the 1,693-mile flight, which is blocked at 4hr northbound and 3hr55min southbound. It appears that the carrier plans to fly one of its A320neos without business class, so it’ll be a 188-seat plane, in a one-cabin configuration.

Avianca is launching a Bogota to Tampa flight

What’s pretty incredible is that this will be Tampa’s only nonstop connection to South America, so it’s cool to see the airport now offering access to a third continent (in addition to North America and Europe).

This route seems perfectly logical, and I’m surprised it took this long to add — Tampa has a large Latin American population. On top of that, Avianca has a huge network in Latin America and affordable fares, so I’m sure this will prove popular for anyone headed to the region.

Tampa has an impressive amount of international service nowadays, including on Aeromexico (to Mexico City), Air Canada (to various points in Canada), British Airways (to London Gatwick), Cayman Airways (to Grand Cayman), Delta (to Amsterdam), Discover Airlines (to Frankfurt), Edelweiss Air (to Zurich), Copa Airlines (to Panama City), Frontier (to various points in the Dominican Republic), JetBlue (to Cancun), Porter Airlines (to various points in Canada), Silver Airways (to the Bahamas), Southwest (to Havana), Virgin Atlantic (to London Heathrow), and WestJet (to various points in Canada).

Also, not at all related to this announcement, but can we give Tampa Airport’s social media department some credit for being absolutely hilarious?

This is part of Avianca’s larger Florida expansion

While I think the new route between Bogota and Tampa is the most interesting, it’s worth noting that this is part of a larger expansion, whereby Avianca plans to add five new routes to Florida. The other four routes are new connections to existing airports. In 2025, we’ll see Avianca launch the following other routes to Florida:

  • Guatemala City (GUA) to Miami (MIA)
  • Managua (MGA) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
  • Medellin (MDE) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
  • San Jose (SJO) to Miami (MIA)

Two of those four additional routes are already on sale.

As of March 30, 2025, Avianca plans to add a new daily, year-round flight between San Jose and Miami. The route will operate with the following schedule:

AV604 San Jose to Miami departing 8:25AM arriving 1:15PM
AV605 Miami to San Jose departing 9:40PM arriving 10:40PM

As of March 31, 2025, Avianca plans to add a new daily, year-round flight between Medellin and Fort Lauderdale. The route will operate with the following schedule:

AV190 Medellin to Fort Lauderdale departing 10:20AM arriving 2:45PM
AV191 Fort Lauderdale to Medellin departing 4:30PM arriving 6:50PM

Here’s how Avianca CEO Frederico Pedreira describes this development:

“Florida has historically been a key point of connection with Latin America, so it is essential for us to help more families reconnect, boost tourism and promote business. So far in 2024, we have transported more than four million travelers on more than 27,000 flights to and from the United States. So these new routes respond to the needs of our customers and represent an opportunity for them to fly directly to more destinations in both regions where we already have a strong presence.”

Avianca is expanding in Florida

Bottom line

Avianca is adding five new routes to Florida, the most interesting of which is a new Bogota to Tampa flight. This will be Tampa’s only nonstop link to South America, and I’m sure this will prove popular, given the size of Tampa’s population, plus the ties to Latin America. I’m always happy to see Tampa’s continued success, and hope the airport sees more international flights in the future.

I live in St. Pete and TPA is of course my airport. I am very excited to see this newest addition to TPA. My partner and I have been planning to visit Columbia this year so great !
My wish for Tampa is that we would have service from Air France; that Lufthansa would replace Discover; that Swissair would replace Edelweiss....I mean if SAN can support JL & LH.....TPA should as well. We are more than just beautiful beaches in this region.

I wish they would had added Atlanta. It is the only big city in the southeast that Avianca doesn’t fly to. It would had been a great destination in their network.

you do realize how difficult it would be for Avianca to break into a market totally controlled by DL/LA?
