Spirit announces a new chapter with $11 fares

Spirit announces a new chapter with $11 fares

10

Classless or not, you’ve gotta give Spirit some credit for their quick thinking when it comes to fare sales, from Spirit’s “F-ing Golden” fare sale, where they were “guilty of selling seats though don’t expect to serve the time,” to their “Weiner” fare sale, with fares “too hard to resist.”

Well, after American announced they were filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today, Spirit announced they would be starting service from Dallas to New York, Boston, Orlando, and Atlanta. Of course they celebrated their announcement by saying they were embarking on a new chapter, with an $11 fare sale.

Clever? Classless? A combination of both? What say you? While I’d never fly them, they never cease to entertain me.

    Although it takes a lot of huevos to gloat at the expense of someone else's misfortune it shows poor taste. Egos are large and especially fragile in the airline industry. This is like the smack talking from the 'other team' gets posted in the locker room wall and for motivating your team is priceless. We'll see who has the last laugh.

    I've never flown Spirit but if you find someone who has, they get really animated and angry when they talk about their worst travel experience of all time forever and ever more.

    I've flown them ACY-Florida (multiple locations) a few times. They're really not that bad. If you pay the money to join their $9 fare club (my company paid for me), your baggage fees go down, even carryon. It was much cheaper than taking US out of PHL, and ACY was so much simpler to get thru than PHL. They'll never be my primary airline, but it really wasn't that bad at all.

    @Dan: Is $41 for a flight so bad? ;-)

    Love the marketing- it's brillant!

    They constantly try to stoop lower and lower. I will not give them a penny of my business. Their $11 fare will end up costing you about $100 by the time you add in fees such as: 1) Buying your ticket 2) Selecting a seat 3) Bringing bags on your trip 4) Drinking a glass of water while in flight. They love to advertise low fares and nickel and dime you all the way to the bank. Spirit sucks!

    Charging for carryon... priceless (not). $30 EEK!

    They are trying to be Ryanair of the USA. They will do anything for free publicity and it works. They have a smart marketing team that seems to get this small airline frequent media attention.
