China Airlines’ First All-Male Crew Flies To New York, Thanks To Rule Change

China Airlines’ First All-Male Crew Flies To New York, Thanks To Rule Change

106

Once in a while, we’ll see airlines highlight the special ways that flights are crewed, whether it’s an all-female crew, all-black crew, mother-daughter pilot duo, etc. Well, Taiwan-based SkyTeam carrier China Airlines just had a milestone flight, and it was neither a coincidence, nor was it planned by the company.

China Airlines flight attendants planned their own crew roster

A vast majority of China Airlines flight attendants are female, and historically, the company has limited how many male flight attendants there can be per flight, with most flights having at most one or two flight male flight attendants. As a result, male flight attendants rarely worked together, and rarely got to know one another on trips.

However, the flight attendant union recently managed to get the company to change this policy, so that the decision of who is crewed on a flight is no longer dependent on gender. With this policy change in place, some male flight attendants decided to plan a special flight to commemorate this.

Back in August 2025, several male flight attendants with fairly high seniority decided to bid on the same flight, so that they’d have good odds of being assigned that trip. Trip bidding for flight attendants is complicated, and it considers seniority, among other factors. They all agreed that in the event that a female flight attendant with higher seniority bid on the trip, they’d all drop out, and bid on a different trip.

They decided to bid on a trip from Taipei (TPE) to New York (JFK). There was no significance to the date that they chose. The reason they decided on New York was because the crew hotel is conveniently located, and many of the flight attendants travel there frequently, so they could have a special trip together, and plan some fun activities.

They weren’t necessarily expecting this would be successful with the first try, but sure enough, it was! Derek Lin, one of the flight attendants, shared details of this trip on Instagram, and it looks like they had a great time.

As the flight attendant wrote on Instagram (translated to English);

“This is not only a small milestone, but also a hope that no matter what profession you are in, there will be no more gender frameworks and labels from the previous generation. In the future, these things can be so commonplace. Let’s use our small efforts to continue to move the awareness of equality forward, okay?”

Kudos to this crew, what a nice effort!

Obviously people face different kinds of discrimination in different careers, and I think it’s worth celebrating when those “barriers” are broken. Yes, usually policies negatively impact women rather than men, but this is an exception. In this case, the airline quite literally had a policy against having too many male flight attendants on the same flight, and the union was able to get that changed.

So as a one-time thing, I think this is a really lovely concept. And I think it’s all the cooler when you consider the fact that the company didn’t even have anything to do with the planning, but instead, the flight attendants took it upon themselves to plan this.

Bottom line

Until recently, China Airlines didn’t even allow too many male flight attendants to work on the same flight. The union finally managed to get the company to end that policy, so they decided to celebrate by planning an all-male trip. Their planning really was impressive, as they managed to bid on the same New York trip on the first try.

As a one-time thing, I think this is fantastic. In the future, hopefully gender won’t be a consideration in planning one way or another.

What do you make of this China Airlines all-male crew?

Good. In the same that we should celebrate an all-women crew, etc., we should ALSO celebrate an all-male one.

The definition of feminism - which has been all-but forgotten - is EQUALITY between men and women. Ergo, and very logically, if something were worth celebrating for all women, it is equally worthy for all men, and vice-versa.

I actually don't see any comments about feminism being an issue here. I am a feminist (aren't most people?) and think this is great. If anything, I see many comments from men weirdly obsessed with the idea that an all-male crew means gay porn. When I saw this picture, I thought "look how happy they look!" When other men on this comment thread saw this picture, they thought "somethings gay about this". If you want to be angry about something, maybe start there?

  4. Lieflat19 Diamond

This is amazing! It should be celebrated. Men finally having their day!

    1. Darryl Macklem Guest

Try "THINKING". You’re acting like society automatically sees men as better, but that’s not what this is about at all. It’s just a flight crew doing their jobs. There’s nothing to “celebrate” or turn into some point about gender. Not everything needs to be twisted into a competition. Fucking buffoon.

In my line of work it is sometimes necessary to have a Chaperone of the other sex present for sensitive discussions or interactions. Congratulations to the group for being able to arrange this, but I might have considered taking one female Flight Attendant just in case a situation arose where a female Flight Attendant would be helpful for legal, medical or cultural reasons.

    1. Man&Woman Guest

I absolutely agree with Dan. For example in my country it is a punishable offence for a male physician to physically examine a female patient without a female chaperone present, particularly if curtains need to be drawn during the examination for privacy/modesty. On a long-duration flight, it is entirely possible that a situation might occur which could necessitate physical contact between aircrew and a passenger in order to assist them, whether for a medical reason...

I absolutely agree with Dan. For example in my country it is a punishable offence for a male physician to physically examine a female patient without a female chaperone present, particularly if curtains need to be drawn during the examination for privacy/modesty. On a long-duration flight, it is entirely possible that a situation might occur which could necessitate physical contact between aircrew and a passenger in order to assist them, whether for a medical reason or for a more mundane reason such as assistance in the washroom for a handicapped passenger or child (travelling alone) should the need arise. In such an instance, a flight attendant of the same sex might be ideal, especially if the passenger is uncomfortable having a person of the opposite sex with them in such a situation (which could even be haram for some religions). Having an all single-sex crew is poor planning and even worse if it is intentional.
For a different reason, an all-female crew is also undesirable if large belligerent male passengers need to be handled. Unless the all-female crew include champion pugilists/weight-lifters or the like. Air marshals, if present, are to prevent hijackings, not to restrain unruly passengers. Physical needs require matching physical solutions, whether for delicate situations or rough ones. The airline/institution that does not plan for that has failed.

Taiwan is rightfully the successor state to the Kingdom of China, while Communist China is a culture only like 70 years old. Taiwan basically has modern standards. As someone who has long observed and expressed solidarity with the Flight Attendants Union — including both the one at China Airlines and the Taiwan Flight Attendants Union — I would like to briefly outline the background of these events. For many years, Taiwanese airlines either prohibited or discouraged men from becoming flight attendants. This was rooted in the belief that “service work” was something only women should do. Such an attitude not only devalues women but also undermines the dignity of the profession. Consequently, airlines in Taiwan have long designed extremely tight uniforms for their female flight attendants — impractical for work, yet praised by designers as “sexy”.

For a long time, airlines in Taiwan had no trade unions at all (EVA Air, in fact, continues to suppress union activities quite aggressively). Around 2016, with the support of other unions, the flight attendants at China Airlines formed their own trade union and launched the first-ever strike organised by flight attendants in Taiwan. After years of struggle with the company, the union gradually gained the ability to enter into negotiations over workplace policies — including those related to gender. Around the same time that the company relaxed its restrictions on the number of male flight attendants per aeroplane, it also introduced a policy allowing female flight attendants to wear trousers while on duty. For many Western readers, this may seem unremarkable, but for the flight attendants at China Airlines, it marked the result of years of collective effort and reflected the company’s growing respect for its employees. Of course, it also challenged the gender stereotype that only women should perform service work. In this sense, I believe it represented a feminist achievement.

It is also worth noting that within the union, male and female flight attendants have always stood side by side. Among the union leaders sued by China Airlines for organising strike actions were both men and women. Together, they fought for fairer policies — the removal of the quota limiting male flight attendants, the option for female flight attendants to wear trousers on duty, and the introduction of menstrual leave for women employees. They are allies, not opponents, contrary to what some commentators have suggested.

  18. JustSaying Guest
