While minor in the scheme of things, here’s something that long haul premium cabin passengers on American Airlines will certainly appreciate.
In this post:
American changing premium cabin headphone policy
American offers Bang & Olufsen headphones in first and business class on long haul flights. That’s a really nice feature, as it’s rare to see airlines offer such nice headphones in premium cabins (even on top airlines).
The one annoyance is that crews collect those headphones well before landing, so premium cabin passengers often can’t enjoy the entertainment with those headphones for the last 30-45 minutes of a flight. Crews do hand out cheap, disposable earbuds, but that’s hardly an ideal alternative.
So there’s some great news on this front. As of April 23, 2025, passengers in premium cabins can leave their headphones at their seats before deplaning, as they’ll no longer be collected before landing. This will initially apply to passengers on all US inbound flights, as well as Hawaii Flagship Service and American Flagship Service flights. Meanwhile it’ll launch for international flights departing the US as of later this year.
American shares that this is also great for flight attendants, who will be able to focus on taking care of passengers during the flight, as part of the company’s “commitment to enhancing the customer experience.”

My take on this subtle but positive change
First of all, I’m curious about the logistics of this policy change. Obviously the reason that headphones have been collected before landing is to make sure that no customers try to take the headphones off the aircraft (not that they’d be that useful, given that they’re wired).
Will American have some way to still track these before passengers deplane? Are they adding some sort of additional signage to indicate that the headphones can’t be removed from the aircraft? Is American just prepared for more headphones to potentially go missing? I’m curious how American is approaching this internally.
Second of all, I’m really getting the sense that American is starting to take customer experience a bit more seriously. It seems like this was genuinely motivated by wanting to eliminate one of the minor pain points of the customer experience on long haul flights.
We know that American realizes it needs to become more premium, and realizes it needs to compete on customer service, and not just schedule and price. Now, that doesn’t mean American will suddenly install seat back TVs on all planes, but we’re seeing this in other ways. For example, American is introducing free Wi-Fi, has improved its million miler program, and more. Of course the airline has a long way to go, but I’m happy to see some generally positive steps being taken.

Bottom line
American will soon stop collecting premium cabin Bang & Olufsen headphones before landing. This policy will change as of April 23 for all flights to or within the US, while it’ll change as of later this year for flights to international destinations. This is hardly the biggest development ever, but it’s definitely a minor frustration that many passengers have had.
Anyone else happy to see this headphone policy change?
@Lucky I'm curious, do you typically use the headphones provided by airlines (even these from AA)? I just find it kind of puzzling and honestly a redundant part all in all. Even these "premium" B&O headphones have been around for so long and must have so much degradation, that I just wouldn't see myself using them. I genuinely believe that 95%+ of all travellers on premium cabins have their own noise-cancelling headphones or at the...

Even these "premium" B&O headphones have been around for so long and must have so much degradation, that I just wouldn't see myself using them. And I ask you @Luck in particular because you have mentioned in the past owning a pair of Bose QC35s and 700s as well as AirPods Pro (unsure if you have the QC Ultra or Pro Max), so I just wouldn't see any reason to use a device that, beyond its potential to serve as germ habitat, is outdated/ of lower quality to the hardware you own.
I haven’t heard the credit card pitch in a couple of months. Maybe I’ve just been lucky. Maybe it has to do with changes in the Barclays relationship. Maybe they’re trying to become more premium. Whatever the reason, I welcome the end of the credit card push over the PA.
The headphones hardly work or the jack doesn’t work right. I can usually get one audio channel to work with my own single-pin headphones. The success rate with the provided headphones has been so poor I don’t even bother anymore,
I get to my seat and immediately put their headphones away without even opening them or ask the FA to check them back in for me. Besides, because they aren’t available on all segments...

On Flagship SFO-JFK right now. They collected the headphones about 45 minutes before arrival
Speaking of American, Alaska and Hawaiian joins them at JFKs Terminal 8!

Barely matters when lack of maintenance has left so many headsets AND headphone jacks in those cabins with poor or no connection.
I’ll still avoid them like the Plague…
Were people ever really stealing these en masse?
Why didn't Delta or UA ever really do this? Does this have more to do w/ the local clientele that's flying AA instead of UA/DL? Do AA customers have a proclivity to steal headphones?
I don't believe DL or UA provide a high-end noise cancellation headphone like AA does.
Not so trusting that American Airlines has all of the sudden taken a better attitude. Time will tell.
Not sure how American can become more premium if they don't fire a good chunk of their crew who don't provide premium service. They should ask Cathay, Qatar, and JAL how to train their crew.
"American shares that this is also great for flight attendants, who will be able to focus on taking care of passengers during the flight..."
LOL!
They're replacing headphones with a new vendor.
Theft of B&O is a good tax write off.
Confirm that with JonNYC.
Good move.
