Update: This offer for the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card has expired. Learn more about the current offers here.
I’ve been traveling the past day, so my apologies in advance if this is old news to some of you. 😉
Chase has officially brought back a limited time 50,000 point sign-up bonus on their co-branded Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card after spending $2,000 within three months, provided you haven’t earned a bonus on the card in the past 24 months. The same offer is also available for the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Card. The card has a $99 annual fee, which isn’t waived the first year.
While this is not an offer I will personally be taking advantage of (given that I prefer to earn and redeem miles for international premium cabins), I do think this is a great option for domestic travel, given that you earn two free roundtrips with the sign-up bonus, and the 6,000 points you receive each anniversary more than justify the annual fee.
Also keep in mind that if you rack up 110,000 points in a year you’ll earn Companion Pass with Southwest, which allows someone else to travel with you for the entire year. For domestic travel that’s a value that’s tough to beat.
I predict over the coming years elite status will become less and less valuable as revenue requirements are added and benefits are slowly cut due to lack of competition (we’re going from six legacies a few years ago to three once the American/US Airways merger is complete). So with that in mind, Southwest is about as “humane” as it gets if you’re traveling domestically in coach.
