As I wrote about yesterday, Delta and American Express have six excellent welcome bonuses being pulled today, which are among the best bonuses we’ve ever seen on Delta Amex cards.

I tend to be a bit of a procrastinator, so even though I wrote about these offers several times before, no one in my family had applied for cards as of yesterday afternoon. So last night we put in a few applications for these cards, and I figured I’d share the results.

Delta Amex Cards

Ford’s Delta Amex application

Ford applied for the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express, which I consider to have the best bonus of all. The card is offering 80,000 bonus miles plus 5,000 MQMs after spending $6,000 within the first three months, plus a $100 statement credit after making a Delta purchase within the first three months.

Ford got instantly approved for the card. At a minimum the card’s 80,000 SkyMiles can be redeemed for $800 worth of travel on Delta. Then there’s the $100 statement credit, and long term this card may be worth the $195 annual fee (Rates & Fees) for the companion certificate.

My dad’s Delta Amex application

My dad applied for the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card. The card is offering 75,000 bonus miles plus 5,000 MQMs after spending $3,000 within the first three months, plus a $100 statement credit after making a Delta purchase within the first three months.

My dad has a special incentive to apply for this card. He currently has 998,000+ lifetime miles with Delta.

If he gets approved and completed the minimum spend, he’ll become a million miler with Delta. So this credit card application won’t just earn him lots of miles, but will also earn him lifetime status with Delta, which is pretty awesome.

Unfortunately my dad didn’t get an instant approval, but rather got a pending decision. Hopefully it comes through!

My Delta Amex application

I decided to apply for the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express. I figured I wouldn’t be approved, simply because I already have five Amex credit cards, and that seems to be their limit (this is only credit cards, and doesn’t include charge cards)

However, I figured it was worth a shot:

  • Some report being able to get six Amex credit cards
  • Typically if you’re denied for an Amex card for this reason, you’re denied before they even pull your credit, so there’s no downside to trying

After applying I received a “pending review” page, and was asked to call in.

Go figure they informed that I already had five cards, and asked me if I wanted to close down an existing one. I asked them to just cancel my application, since I value all five Amex cards I have, and get good use out of them.

Bottom line

I’m happy Ford got approved for his application. I hope my dad gets approved for his, as it would earn him million miler status with Delta. I’m not surprised I didn’t get approved due to the five card limit.

If you’ve been considering getting a Delta Amex but haven’t yet applied, you have just a couple of hours left to do so. In particular, consider the Gold Delta SkyMiles CardGold Delta SkyMiles Business CardPlatinum Delta SkyMiles Card, or Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Card, which have the best bonuses.

  1. Been procrastinating too. Shot off an application for the Delta Plat Biz at DTW as the plane boarded for Beijing. Instant approval. Whew!

  2. My five Amex Cards
Delta Reserve (approved last week, looking forward to making this my main nonbonus spend card over time)
    Delta Platinum
    Bonvoy
    Bonvoy Brilliant
    Aspire

Need to figure out if I need to keep Bonvoy long term (it is really only for the 35K certificate, which may or may not be useful). It could be more beneficial to go with a Hilton No Fee / Aspire combo to replace the Bonvoy and Ascend cards.

  3. Lucky, why not close down the Amex card you value the least temporarily to get the Delta card and earn its bonus?

  4. Appreciate your post. As a multi-decade flyer of Delta and Million Miler, I was not clear when you stated ” So this credit card application won’t just earn him lots of miles, but will also earn him lifetime status with Delta, which is pretty awesome.” I was not informed about the ….lifetime status”. Can you explain? Appreciated.

  5. Thanks for the post.
Do they credit welcome bonus even if you have other Delta cards ? My wife had a card years ago, her application was approved but now they say she is not eligible for the welcome offer.

  6. Paul, did Amex tell your wife she was not eligible during the application process? I was approved for the business card, however I had one years ago and I am now wondering if I will get the bonus?

  7. I have a platinum card and self referred to the Platinum Delta card. That signup bonus was 70k SkyMiles and 10k MQDs. However, I got 15K MR points to my platinum card. So in reality I got 85k SkyMiles.

  8. Regarding your Dad and his million miler status — I believe only MQMs count for that status. Are you sure that MQMs awarded for bonuses or spending count towards million miler status?

  9. I got the Gold Amex a couple of weeks ago and my wife was approved for the Gold as well this week.

I’m always keeping an eye for sign up bonuses that work for us because even though we love travel we don’t fly enough to justify a lot of the better cards like Amex Platinum. I figured 60,000 points for $2000 spend is an amazing offer considering the fee is waived for one year. This was my first Amex card

  10. So I was approved and received my Delta Platinum Amex. I have an upcoming charge that will get me the 3k easily; however, the vendor only accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.

If I buy a VISA giftcard with my Amex to pay the vendor, will I get credit for meeting the 3k spend requirement for the bonus miles?

  11. @JT because he has 998,020 miles. It’s an image in the post. Spending to earn the bonus will get him to a million miles because there are bonus MQMs. Of course delta silver is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick and not much else. But it does impress at least some staff (or they act that way).

  12. @Ed, today AmEx confirmed the welcome offer, but yesterday they did not. We need to buy some Delta tickets so we’ll figure it out quickly.

  13. Sorry to say, your Dad has little to look forward to as a MM’er. Lifetime Silver status isn’t worth squat when flying Delta. At least as a MM United flyer I get lounge access internationally. I did get a nice Tiffany vase from Delta, tho.

  14. @Ed, at the end my wife got the full welcome offer (60k miles for a delta gold card) even if she had the card years before.

  15. Thank you for the update Paul. I have not met the minimum spend yet. My Chase Sapphire Reserve is still in the front of my wallet.
