Timing about canceling one card and applying for another

Timing about canceling one card and applying for another

After Virgin Atlantic’s appalling point devaluation, I am planning to drop my VA card that is about to have its annual fee applied. I’m also considering applying for a Citibank double cash card.
Is there a preferred order: apply then cancel or cancel first then apply.

I don’t think it matters too much; my thought process would be to apply first, because dropping the card will reduce your credit line, and your credit score might lose a few points temporarily; so in theory your credit score should be better before dropping the card. But either way you’re probably completely fine.
