Rental Car Liability

Rental Car Liability

  1. Anonymous Guest

    Hey Lucky,
I live outside the US and thus don’t have any car insurance. I will be traveling to the States this summer and will be renting a car for 3 days. I will use my Amex platinum to cover the CDW, (seems it adds some medical expenses as well which is why I choose it over others as any secondary is primary for me), but haven’t found a way around liability insurance yet.

Do I just need to purchase the rental companies liability insurance or is there another way around this? Part of me just wants to gamble to save the $14 a day but the other part of me is telling me not be cheap and get in trouble later.

    Any thoughts?

    Appreciate it!

Tried to post this before and not sure if it went through so sorry if it’s a repost…

I live out the US and thus have no car insurance. I will be renting a car this summer for about 3 days. I plan on using my Amex Platinum to cover the CDW, (because it also covers some medical), but wasn’t sure the best way to handle liability. Part of me thinks I am a good driver so no worries, but then again I don’t want my being cheap to cost me later. Is there any trick to get liability for cheaper than the rental agency wants to charge, (about $14 a day), or should I just shell that out to be safe?

    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!!

Hi Dustin, Insurance and comfort with risk are such personal choices, it’s hard for anyone to tell you what your choice will be. I usually just use my credit card insurance and my normal car insurance since I live in the US but it’s hard to say what I would do if I had to make a choice. I guess think of both options and go with whatever gives you the least amount of stress.
