Marriott free night certs from Amex cards have been devalued

Previously, you could use the 35k point free night certs at any Cat5 hotel. Now with peak and off peak pricing, if the room you’re trying to book is showing 40k pricing, you can’t use your certs. I guess this makes sense but I was secretly hoping that Marriott would let you use these certs at any Cat 5 hotel. Now these free night certs have even less value than before. Same goes for the 50k certs. Most Cat 6 hotels are now 60k points.
