Credit Card Strategy

Credit Card Strategy

  1. Rob67 New Member

There are 4 credit cards I would like to apply for and would like to know what strategy to use in terms of how many and which ones to apply for at the same time initially, how long to wait between applications etc.
    The cards are
1 – Marriott Business Rewards – for the free night and I use Marriott probably most freq
2 – New Hilton Amex Ascend card – for the current 100,000 offer, 2d most freq hotel used
3 – Hyatt card – for the free night
4 – IHG – for the free night

Since 3 of the 4 are Chase, I know I’ll have to watch the 5/24 for those cards that it applies to and would apply for Chase cards in a branch location

And any other recommendations you might have
    Thank You
    Rob

I believe none of those three Chase cards are under the 5/24 umbrella so I would just apply for them in the order that you value them with some spacing. The AmEx card can wait until later or paired with a Chase application.

I may be overthinking things, but seems like a lot of other factors come into play. Thinking simpler is better in most cases, I kept my initial question short, but perhaps for better clarity, I will expand some of my thoughts.

And, just to keep things interesting, it looks like there is both a new business Hilton card as well as a personal card both with the same 100,000 point offers – so up my count to 5 now (and will need to cancel 1 or 2 other amex cards to stay within Amex limit including either personal or business spg).

1 – better to get the free night cards (3 out of the 5) first since free night is not until the 1st anniversary
2 – as the Amex Hilton’s are new cards, bonus offers (at this level) may not last if applications are spread out
3 – other bonus offers may become better (but would have to wait for free night so a tradeoff)
4 – meeting min spends on all is a downside, but based on some anticipated spend needs I have coming up, I think I can manage
5 – for Chase, applying in branch may complicate this, but since I have both credit freeze and a fraud alert this is the most efficient way (especially with fraud alert, they have to contact me to see report and this is usually done by letter)
6 – The business cards I would be adding is a sole proprietorship so would hard pull against personal credit report
7 – Unlike what I have read from Lucky, Amex has always done a hard inquiry for the other business cards I have. And since 2 different departments handle business versus personal, each one would have a separate pull (and same for Chase)

Lucky talked about applying for multiple cards on same day back in 2014 – but I don’t know if anything has changed since then

    Thank You!
    Robert
