Amex Platinum Retention Offer

I am posting this here as a data point hoping this would help someone.

This is my 3rd year with Amex Personal Platinum.
I got charged with the annual fee a week ago. When called for retention, the call was very straightforward.
The offer I chose:
Immediate 5K MRs
+
15K more MRs upon spending $3000 within 60 days.

Other offers I was presented:
1. $100 Statement credit
2. Immediate 5K MRs + 10K MR upon spending $2000 within 60 days.

Nice. Do you use the card actively?

Not really. Mainly for the lounge access and Amex offers.

As a newbie to this site and this space, what is “retention”?
Also…as a AMEX Gold Card member, I just received invite for Platinum offer for 50K MR points for $5K spend within 3 months of membership approval. Is this a better deal than the currently online advertisement of 40K MR points for a $3k spend? Thanks.

Welcome

Retention
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customer_retention

Basically offers of a bonus to continue as a customer of a company. Sometime also used by companies to keep key employees, even the US military gives out retention/re-enlistment bonuses to keep key personnel like SF or sub crews.

Amex Plat offer, yes it’s better. Requires that you can meet the 5K spend requirement, if you have problems to meet 5K in 3 months consider buying gift card for thing/store you will buy/buy in later in the year.

Periodically Amex offers increased sign up bonuses via card match for 100K on Plat. I am not sure when to expect the next 100K offer and also cannot say whether you will be eligible or not. But if you are not in a rush to amass some MR, I would personally hang around. The last time something like this happened was late Aug 2015. Even now, you can check your eligibility on cardmatch and see if something better shows up.

Thanks PhatMiles..
To follow up…the invitation for update did note that I did some recent international travel (Nov-Dec 2015); I charged a few transactions on the Gold card – that may be the primary reason I received the offer. I plan on making another international trip in March-April, so I’m inclined to wait a bit…

If anything, I can always call and apply for possible approval.
