American Express Ends Partnership with Shangri-La Hotels

American Express Ends Partnership with Shangri-La Hotels

    Dear All,

I had been a follower of this website for a couple of years and I reside in Hong Kong.

I am currently an Amex Platinum Charge Card member and I had received notification from Amex by mail yesterday that they would end their partnership with Shangri-La Hotels on 31 March 2021 (see attached photo). Amex Centurion and Platinum Charge Card holders will no longer be comped with free Shangri-La Diamond and Jade memberships after this date and all existing Shangri-La memberships will expire after the current term.

Many of the existing Amex Centurion and Platinum Charge Card members like myself are feeling very disappointed at this move. Amex has already cut the HK$2000 Grand Hyatt Hong Kong dining coupons last year and they had also reduced the number of free supplementary cards from 4 to 2 (existing members are grandfathered). However, the membership fees that they charge in Hong Kong is one of the highest in the world – HK$38,000 for Centurion and HK$7,800 for Platinum (Exchange rate is HK$7.8 =US$1).

It seems that the only good and useful hotel membership remaining is the Hilton Gold as it gives free breakfast and Hilton is quite generous in upgrading Gold to Executive Floor rooms too. I feel that the Marriott Bonvoy Gold membership that Amex comped is useless as it only gives 2pm late check out and there is no free breakfast or lounge access at all. I think Amex should replace Shangri-La with another hotel group such as Hyatt or at least upgrade our Marriott Bonvoy to Platinum. Many existing card members have voiced out that they are considering to cut this card.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and healthy holiday season!

    Best regards,
    Travelprofessor
