I’ve been out of the loop but is it still possible to book Cathay (biz class preferably) from Taipei to HK using Alaska points? Or was there some intra Asia restriction? Can I use BA Avios? Also, any idea how many Alaska points it’ll take? Thanks!

Economy 12,500

Yes you can use BA Avios, that’s probably a better idea given how short the route is and you’ll also have the option of flying Cathay Dragon.

Oh didn’t know you can also book Cathay Dragon using Avios. Do you know if it’s the same number of points? Can this all be done on BA’s website or do I have to call in? Thanks!

BA’s award chart is distance based and the flight’s only 500 miles so it’d cost 6k Avios for economy and a bit more than double for business, regardless of whether you choose Cathay Pacific or Cathay Dragon.

If award space is available, it’s bookable on BA’s website. However, if you’re booking last minute, you should call as CX/KA space doesnt seem to show if booking within a week or so.

The first zone of BA’s avios chart is for flights of up to 650 miles (excluding flights to/from/within US)

Generally, since KA is more of a regional carrier, their business class is recliner seats – sort of like CX’s prem economy with a better recline. KA’s first class seat is the same as CX’s business class reverse herringbone seats.

Personally, given how short the flight is, I’d just do economy on either carrier, if you were originating in HKG.

If you’re connecting as part of a larger itinerary and/or were planning to be at the airport for a few hours before the flight, then it’d be good to get business class for the lounge access.

Any idea how you can tell if the Cx business class seats will be herringbone or a regional recliner seat? All it says on BA site is A330. Thanks!
