This month we’ve seen some big changes to the Marriott and Starwood credit card portfolio, which coincides with Marriott’s new loyalty program launching.

As part of this, American Express and Chase are adding new credit card approval restrictions as of tomorrow, August 26, 2018. So if you want to apply for either Marriott or Starwood credit cards under the old rules, today is your last day to do so.

Bottom line

You’ll want to double check the exact application terms for each card, but as of tomorrow there will be new restrictions on applying for all Marriott and Starwood cards. What’s interesting here is that the restrictions for Amex cards are based on whether you have Chase cards, and vice versa, which is different than restrictions we’ve seen from card issuers in the past.

Do you plan on applying for any cards before these new terms kick in?

Comments

  1. Wife got the 125k email for Lux and she’s not restricted after tomorrow but we’re not in a rush to signup.

  2. Just applied and got instantly approved for SPG Lux. No upgrade offer and I have Marriott/SPG cards already so didn’t want to miss the bonus opportunity!

  3. I applied for the Marriott Business card today but got the 30 day message. Will I still be eligible for the bonus if am approved after 8/26?

  4. @Lucky! Just got off the SPG rep and he said Rewards points are not transferring to airline partners with no ETA on a fix. Have you heard anything about this?

  5. You should be ashamed of yourself pumping Marriott cards instead of covering the merger IT disaster.

  6. My 100k upgrade offer expire in October, will this bypass the SPG/Marriott restriction if I wait until October to upgrade?

  7. @Eric read the term of yours. Mine didn’t say anything about the restriction. Card itself not really that great. @Lucky did a good job contrasting that with the biz card. I do suggest if this 100k offer pop up in 2020, I might pull the trigger. By then 1. this card might be so bad that they will relaunch the card which is supported by 2. SPG will disappear or end is in sight. I bet that this card will be near end of life and you are just letting the once per lifetime go to waste.

By now it is too late anyways if you wanted to do a trifecta, surprise why @Lucky didn’t hype up these 2 cards more than this. Not that he didn’t 🙂

  8. @lucky. What is the most miles possible if you have never had marriott/ritz cards and had the spg cards a long time ago?

  9. @Lucky- Any idea when the SPG/Marriott merger will be successfully completed? My SPG is still missing everything from 7/18 forward, so 14 nights at this point.

Any idea what is taking so long to fix accounts? Why is no one talking about all the problems?

  10. Am I eligible for the 100k Amex Lux bonus? I acquired the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card in March 2016 and still have it. I have a 20000-point upgrade offer that I have not exercised in my Chase portal. I have no other Marriott cards. Basically, points (ii) and (iii) are ambiguous to me. Am I considered to have “acquired” my card in the past 90 days? Am I considered to have “received” an upgrade offer?

Effective 8/26, welcome offer not available to applicants who (i) have or have had The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card from JP Morgan in the last 30 days, (ii) have acquired The Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, The Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase, or The Marriott Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 90 days, or (iii) received a welcome or upgrade offer for The Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, The Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase, or The Marriott Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 24 months.

  11. I applied on 8/23, got the “we’re taking our time to review” message, and was just approved on 8/28. Any idea what this means for my 100k welcome bonus offer? I’m an existing holder of ritz and all other Marriott/SPG cards so would definitely not be eligible for the 100k if I applied today. I will ask them outright and cancel the card if not entitled to the offer, but wonde if anyone else is in the same boat.
