As of today (July 1), InterContinental is raising the price of Ambassador status from $150 to $200. InterContinental is interesting in that they only have two elite levels — Ambassador status, which can be bought, and Royal Ambassador, which is by invitation only. They also participate in Priority Club, though Priority Club elite benefits don’t apply at InterContinental hotels.
At $150, Ambassador status was a particularly good bargain. You got a room upgrade (though typically only to a room with a view or a “deluxe” room), water and fruit as a welcome gift, 4PM check-out, double occupancy for the price of single occupancy (which is useful in some parts of the world), along with 5,000 points and a buy one get one free weekend night certificate.
That’s quite a bargain, given that the free weekend night certificate and 5,000 points are easily worth much more than $150. But at the same time raising the price by $50 without adding any benefits is pretty lame, though here’s to hoping they add something to the program. A few months back they did send out a survey asking people what they’d like to see in the Ambassador program, so let’s hope they listened to some of the suggestions.
On the plus side, Ambassador renewal will still only cost $100 (and yes, you get the weekend night certificate and 5,000 points every year).
