The IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is offering a potentially excellent new welcome bonus.

New IHG Premier Card welcome bonus

The $89 annual fee IHG Premier Card is now offering a two-part welcome bonus when you spend $3,000 within the first three months:

  • Earn 125,000 IHG Rewards Club points
  • Earn a reward night valid at a property costing up to 40,000 points per night

As a point of comparison, previously the card offered a bonus of up to 140,000 IHG Rewards Club points, without an additional reward night. So the new bonus gets you 15,000 fewer points, but you get a free night certificate valid at a property costing up to 40,000 points, which represents a significant improvement.

Why you should get the IHG Premier Card

With my hotel strategy, IHG isn’t my primary hotel group, but I still strategically find value with the program. There are many reasons to have the IHG Premier Card, including:

  • IHG Rewards Club Platinum status just for having the card
  • An anniversary free night certificate every year, valid at a property costing up to 40,000 points
  • A fourth night free on award redemptions
  • A Global Entry or TSA Pre-Check credit once every four years

For me the annual free night certificate alone more than justifies the annual fee, and everything else is the icing on the cake.

Yes, IHG just switched to dynamic award pricing

Just a few days ago I wrote about how IHG Rewards Club switched to dynamic award pricing without notice, and there are no longer caps on how many points are required for a free night redemption. As I stated in that post, this is a devaluation, plain and simple (Update: it appears that this devaluation has been dialed back somewhat).

As I wrote in that post, though, this doesn’t fundamentally alter the value proposition of the IHG Premier Card, at least for me as of now. Like I said, I have the card primarily for the anniversary free night certificate and IHG Rewards Club Platinum status.

I’ve just looked at all of the hotels where I’ve redeemed these certificates the last three times, and all still cost no more than 40,000 points on a vast majority of dates.

So while I don’t like these changes in terms of the value of the program overall, it doesn’t fundamentally change my perception of the IHG Premier Card.

Bottom line

The IHG Premier Card has a phenomenal new welcome bonus of 125,000 IHG Rewards Club points plus a free night certificate upon completing minimum spending. This is an excellent offer if you don’t yet have the card.

While I don’t consider the IHG Rewards Club program to be competitive with some other hotel loyalty programs, I find the annual free night certificate, Platinum status, and fourth night free on award redemptions, to more than justify the $89 annual fee.

Anyone plan on picking up the IHG Premier Card with this great bonus?

  1. I wish they’ve added 125+40 = 165K points than a free night. I’ve lots of free night from last two years

  2. @ Thomas — You can redeem the 40K night whenever a hotel would otherwise cost no more than that. So the free night certificate may be redeemable at a hotel one night, but not the next.

  3. Nah, I’m done with IHG. We had 5000 pts/night proper Intercontinental hotel not that long ago thru Points Break. Then we got an “enhancing experience” by raising Points Break from 5000 pts to up to 15,000 pts a night with no warning. Then they gutted PB completely to “help customers to realize full value”… I mean I get it, every major FFP have gotten worse in some form or another over the last 5 years. But IHG really took “term may change” to a whole new level. Remind me the last time we had an “enhancement” from IHG with a proper heads-up? It is pretty disheartening the way they handled every single devaluation. The devaluation % is also arguably the worst among hotels, no? Bye, IHG. It’s been fun!
