Through April 11, 2018, we’re seeing increased welcome bonuses on Delta’s co-branded American Express cards. The details of these offers are as follows:

With the Gold cards offering up to 60K bonus SkyMiles and the Platinum cards offering up to 70K bonus SkyMiles, just how many of these cards can you potentially apply for during the promotion period? Let’s look at the rules surrounding applications.

All Delta Amex cards are considered separate products

All four of these cards are considered separate products. That means that over the course of your lifetime you can earn the welcome bonus on all four of the cards, including the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American ExpressPlatinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American ExpressThe Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Card from American Express and Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express. That’s potentially up to 260,000+ SkyMiles worth of welcome bonuses alone, which is huge.

Each of these cards has a “once in a lifetime” restriction on the welcome bonus, meaning you can only earn the bonus on each card once.

Limits on how many total Amex cards you can have

Typically each person is limited to having at most five American Express credit cards at a time. It doesn’t matter whether those are personal or business cards. This doesn’t include charge cards, which include The Business Platinum® Card from American ExpressThe Platinum Card® from American Express, American Express® Business Gold Card, and the American Express® Gold Card. All Delta cards are credit cards and not charge cards.

If you wanted to get all four of these cards, that’s one of the biggest limitations you’d face, since Amex has so many great cards, so personally I’d have a hard time making room in my Amex portfolio to get all of these at once.

Limits on how many Amex cards you can apply for

This is more anecdotal than anything, since Amex doesn’t officially publish rules on this. However, generally you won’t be approved for more than two American Express credit cards in a 90 day period. Given that this promotion runs for a bit over a month, that means that most people won’t be able to pick up more than two Delta credit cards during the promotion period. Some people report being approved for more cards, but that seems to be more the exception than the norm.

In general you can pick any combination of these two cards to apply for during the promotion period:

Bottom line

Over time it’s possible to apply for all four Delta American Express cards. However, in general your biggest limitations in applying for these cards will be Amex’s limit of five credit cards per consumer (excluding charge cards), as well as the typical limit of two new cards per 90 days, though that’s not always enforced.

  1. Hi, I discovered this interesting blog 2 weeks ago while checking for Lounge reviews. I see numerous posts about credit cards applications. Is it a strategy to earn flights with points? Any guide or starting Point to follow?

  2. I have all 4 of the Delta cards and got sign up bonuses on all of them. Same with my wife. They are fairly easy to qualify for. And I’m not sure if you are only limited to 5 AMEX cards at a time because I have all 4 of these Delta, I have a Hilton, I have an SPG (personal and business). I do have the Platinum and Gold cards as well. But I know at least in my case and my wife’s case we both have 6 cards and I’m not entirely sure we couldn’t get another.

For reference I’ve been an AMEX customer since 1991.

  3. @ New Reader — Welcome! If you look in the upper right there’s a link for “Start Here”. Underneath that you’ll find the beginners guide. Please let us know what questions you have once you’ve read through it!

  4. I had all 4 of these Delta cards over a period of 3 years and the bonuses were fantastic.

  5. Was approved for personal Delta platinum on Friday and business Platinum on January 4. So, I’ll have to wait and see if the Delta gold promo is still going next month. 70K miles bonus is good!

  6. The Platinum versions also offer a free companion ticket (48 states for continental residents, but also Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Alaska for their residents) at each anniversary which more than offsets the $195 fee.

  7. Can I apply for BOTH business cards (the Gold and Platinum)? Is there any recommended wait time between the two applications? Me and my wife both had the Gold and Platinum personal cards, and before the end of their first year anniversary we had cancelled them.

  8. Delta points are not valuable anymore. It takes too many to redeem and there are not good options for other redemptions other than flights.

  9. I already have a Delta Reserve Amex for business and a Platinum Delta Skymiles card. Can I apply for a personal Delta Reserve Amex and get the signup bonus?
