Last November, Delta and Airbnb introduced a cool new partnership, where SkyMiles members could earn miles for their activity with Airbnb. For what it’s worth, Airbnb also has a partnership with Qantas (and for a while they had one with Virgin America, but that ended on June 30, 2017, given that Virgin America Elevate is being folded into Alaska Mileage Plan).
So far in 2017, Delta and Airbnb have offered two promotions for bonus miles in conjunction with Airbnb stays. Now they’re back with a third promotion, which is a little bit different.
Airbnb & Delta are offering 2-5x miles for a limited time
For a limited time you can earn more SkyMiles with Airbnb. For bookings through February 28, 2018, and for stays through February 28, 2019, SkyMiles members can earn:
- 5x points on their first stay, plus a $25 coupon for their first booking of at least $75
- 2 SkyMiles per dollar spent with Airbnb on subsequent stays (rather than 1), which is also valid for existing users
As before, in order to earn bonus miles you have to start your Airbnb booking through deltaairbnb.com. This works the same way as an online shopping portal, meaning you have to enter your SkyMiles number on this website, and then will be redirected to Airbnb’s website, which will track your activity and credit you miles.
This promotion is a bit different than the past promotions Delta and Airbnb have offered. During past promotions they offered triple miles rather than double miles, and the new guest bonus was also different. You earned 2,000 bonus miles after your first stay of at least $150, rather than 5x miles plus a $25 voucher.
No change has been made to how many bonus miles you can earn for hosting others — new Airbnb hosts can earn up to 25,000 bonus miles (this comes in the form of 2,500 bonus miles after earning $250 of hosting fees, another 7,500 bonus miles after earning an additional $750 in hosting fees, and another 15,000 bonus miles after earning an additional $1,500 in hosting fees).
Ultimately I think two SkyMiles are worth just under three cents, so this is the equivalent of an almost 3% return on your Airbnb spend. That’t not a reason to choose Airbnb over another type of accommodation, though if you’ll be booking an Airbnb anyway, be sure you to do so through Delta’s Airbnb page to earn bonus miles.
