Hours Remaining For The Best Delta Amex Offer Of The Year

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. Please check out our advertiser policy for further details about the partners we work with. Thanks for your support!

Update: These offers for the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express, the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express and the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express have expired. Learn more about the current offers here.

This is a final reminder that the increased welcome bonuses on the Delta American Express cards are being pulled midday tomorrow, Wednesday, July 6, 2016. So if you’ve been considering applying, this is your last chance to do so. You’ll want to apply either today or early tomorrow to be sure you still get in on the offer.

As a reminder, we’re seeing 50,000-60,000 mile sign-up bonuses on the following cards:

Details of the card sign-up bonuses

The Gold Delta Personal Amex and Gold Delta Business Amex are each offering the following sign-up bonus:

  • 50,000 SkyMiles after making $2,000 in purchases within three months
  • $50 statement credit after making Delta purchase within three months
  • $95 annual fee, waived the first year

Meanwhile the Platinum Delta Personal Amex and Platinum Delta Business Amex are each offering the following sign-up bonus:

  • 60,000 SkyMiles after making $2,000 in purchases within three months
  • 10,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles
  • $100 statement credit after making Delta purchase within three months
  • $195 annual fee

As I’ve shown, you can quite easily apply for two of these cards same day, and earn the sign-up bonuses on both cards — for example, Ford was recently approved for both the Gold Delta Personal Amex and Gold Delta Business Amex.

As a matter of fact, he has already earned the sign-up bonuses on both cards, so he now has over 100,000 Delta SkyMiles.

Which cards would I apply for?

My strategy would be to apply for the Gold Delta SkyMiles Personal Card and Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Card, each of which are offering 50,000 bonus SkyMiles after spending $2,000 within three months. While the annual fees on both cards are $95, they’re waived for the first year.

Furthermore, on each card you receive a $50 Delta statement credit after making a Delta purchase within three months. You could potentially buy Delta gift cards for $50 in order to receive that statement credit.

That means if you spent just $4,000 between the Gold Delta SkyMiles Personal Card and Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Card you’d receive 100,000 bonus Delta SkyMiles, plus $100 worth of statement credits after a Delta purchase. That’s pretty incredible for cards with the first year’s annual fee waived.

I value SkyMiles at ~1.3 cents each, so to me those 100,000 bonus SkyMiles are worth $1,300.

Why should you want Delta SkyMiles?

There are some great uses of Delta SkyMiles, especially for business class redemptions on partner airlines.

SkyMiles continue to be extremely valuable for business class redemptions to Asia on China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, and Korean Air, while they continue to be useful for business class redemptions to Europe on Virgin Atlantic, Alitalia, KLM, Air France, and Air Europa.

For example, I recently redeemed Delta SkyMiles to fly China Airlines business class from Los Angeles to Taipei, which featured a fantastic business class product.

If you don’t want to deal with having to find available award space, SkyMiles can be redeemed for one cent each towards the paid cost of a ticket on Delta, which is a redemption many people like.

Bottom line

If you don’t have these cards already, I’d highly recommend applying. SkyMiles are great for business class cabin redemptions on partners. If you haven’t had any of these cards, I think the easiest strategy to take is to apply for the Gold Delta Personal Amex and Gold Delta Business Amex, given that they each offer sign-up bonuses of 50,000 miles upon completing minimum spend, with a waived annual fee the first year.

Anecdotally I also find these cards are quite easy to be approved for, including the business version of the card.

So if you’ve been considering these cards, now is the time to act.

  1. Once I got a targeted offer for the Delta Plat card with 60,000 miles and 15,000 MQMs after spending $1,000

  2. Already got my Delta Gold in April: targeted offer of 60k miles + $50 statement credit after $1k in spend.

  3. I had the Delta Platinum, but cancelled it a while back. Can I still take advantage of this offer?

  4. @ M E — If you haven’t yet had the Gold versions of the card, then you’d be eligible for that. You can get one of each type of card (meaning one Delta Gold Personal, one Delta Gold Business, one Delta Platinum Personal, and one Delta Platinum Business). Let me know if you have any other questions.

  5. I’ve been trying to sign up for the past several days for the Delta Gold Personal via a friend’s referral link. I get an error page from Amex: “Currently, our systems are not responding.” Customer service has been way less than helpful–happy to do my application over the phone, but my friend won’t get his referral bonus. I really hope they fix their site by tomorrow!

  6. I got the Platinum (my husband and I have each had Delta Gold in the past). Don’t know what we’ll use the miles for. Have more than several hundred thousand even without the bonus. So who knows? Robyn

  7. Ugh, my application for the gold business SkyMiles card has been in progress since 6/21. It was initially rejected due to having too many Amex cards, so I cancelled an old card and asked them to reconsider the application (that was on 6/22). What should I do? Keep waiting and hope I get approved, or should I apply for the personal version of the card and hope I get it, now that I only have 7 cards?

  8. I applied for the Platinum business card yesterday and was approved. Can I apply for the Gold business card as well? What are the chances of being approved for both in 24 hours?

  9. @ LRonglien — You have very good odds of getting approved. Amex sometimes spaces out applications, so if you apply today the application might be put on hold for a few days, but then in a few days it should be processed, and you’d still be eligible for the increased bonus, as it’s based on the application date. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  10. @ Jordan — Have you tried calling them back to check the status of the card? Sometimes they just forget to process it, so it sounds like that might be the case here, as there’s nothing that should take two weeks. I’d recommend calling, and then applying for the personal card as well.

  11. I already have 4 Amex personal and 2 Charge Cards, Am I still eligible. How were you able to apply for 2 cards when you already have the Amex Everyday, Hilton Surpass and Starwood 2 cards ? Did u cancel ?

  12. I’m new to the points game and recently just got two cards that were recommended on this website for the signup bonuses. I’m considering this offer as well do people typically cancel these cards after the first year ?

  13. I called in and was told 7-10 more days (they’ve said this every other time as well), so I canceled the application and applied again – that one went to pending, but I called to verify my identity and they approved it over the phone. Score! SkyMiles plan salvaged. I think the first application just got lost in Amex limbo or something.

  14. DR – I think different people do different things. We typically do not cancel after a year because we only get cards that offer some benefit to us other than the mileage bonus. For example – we need at least one card that doesn’t have FOREX fees – and this new card will be our main card for that. For the time being. Note that we don’t have anywhere near the number of cards that many people have. Six now if I recall correctly (and it will be 5 when I cancel our current Delta gold card). On the other hand – all I am trying to do now is accumulate miles/points that I can use on Delta. Other people have more than one goal.
