Update: These offers for the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express, the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express and the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express have expired. Learn more about the current offers here.

Through November 8, 2017, American Express has brought back their biggest ever welcome bonuses on their co-branded Delta credit cards. These include the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American ExpressGold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express, Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express, and Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express. Specifically, the details of the bonuses are as follows:

  • The Gold Delta SkyMiles Personal Card & Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Card are each offering 50,000 SkyMiles after spending $2,000 within three months, plus 10,000 additional SkyMiles after spending an additional $1,000 within the first six months, plus a $50 statement credit after making a Delta purchase within the first three months; the cards have $95 annual fees, which are waived for the first year
  • The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Personal Card & Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Card are each offering 70,000 SkyMiles plus 10,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles after spending $3,000 within three months, plus a $100 statement credit after making a Delta purchase within the first three months; the cards have a $195 annual fee

While we’ve seen similar offers a couple of times in the past, we’ve never seen them offer bigger welcome bonuses, so I think these are worth seriously considering.

There are still many great uses of SkyMiles, and I value them at maybe 1.2 cents each. However, on the most basic level, Delta’s SkyMiles program is more and more moving towards a revenue model, where SkyMiles can typically be redeemed for at least a penny each towards the cost of a ticket. In other words, 60,000 SkyMiles would get you at least $600 in airfare, and 70,000 SkyMiles would get you at least $700 in airfare.

If you haven’t yet gotten these cards, I’d seriously consider applying.

Should you apply for the Gold or Platinum card?

If you don’t have any Delta cards yet, are you better off applying for the Gold or Platinum version of the card? If you’re going for status with Delta, I’d say the Platinum card is a great option, given that you get 10,000 MQMs with the welcome bonus, and have the opportunity to earn more MQMs with spend.

But if it’s the miles you’re after, I’d say the Gold card is the better option, as you’re earning 60,000 miles upon completing qualifying purchases, with the annual fee waived the first year.

All co-branded cards count towards the Delta MQD waiver

Regardless of which card you apply for, you can earn a statement credit by making a Delta purchase within the first three months.

I already have one/two/five American Express cards… can I still apply?

You can have a maximum of five American Express credit cards and four American Express charge cards at any time.

It doesn’t matter whether they’re personal or business, so that means you can have four American Express business credit cards, or two American Express personal credit cards and two American Express business credit cards. Split it up however you’d like.

The Delta Amex cards are all credit cards and not charge cards.

What kind of a Delta purchase is required for the statement credit?

The Gold version of the offer comes with a $50 Delta statement credit, while the Platinum version of the offer comes with a $100 Delta statement credit.

The purchase has to be made within three months, and any Delta coded purchase should qualify towards the statement credit. That means something like an onboard food or beverage purchase, or even a Delta gift card purchase, should qualify.

Bottom line

While SkyMiles aren’t worth as much as they used to be, these best ever offers are worth considering. If you don’t yet have the Gold Delta SkyMiles Personal Card, Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Card, Platinum Delta SkyMiles Personal Card, and/or Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Card, I’d seriously consider applying. You’re potentially eligible for the bonuses on all four of these cards, as they’re all considered separate products.

  1. i just applied for 4 cards earlier this week. I wish this offer would have been out then as i could use the 70k miles as well as the 10k MQM’s. wonder if i am more likely to get approved if i apply now or just wait until Nov 8th….

  2. While SkyMiles are becoming less and less valuable for aspirational redemptions over time, they’re actually becoming more and more valuable for mundane day-to-day redemptions, to the point that it might be worth considering revising up your valuation, and/or thinking of them more like Avios, as a currency that just isn’t used the same way as other mileage currencies. It’s pretty common to see domestic coach SkyMiles redemptions solidly in excess of the standard “baseline” of 1 cent per mile, and I even recently redeemed 5,500 SkyMiles for a LGA-DCA ticket that was otherwise selling for over $200.

  3. Do we have any idea how long this deal is going to last?

I already have the Gold Delta card, but was planning on picking up the Platinum Card close to the new year so that the bonus chasing spend will count toward the $25k spend needed for the MQD waiver. I am currently Gold Medallion through status match. I fly a lot, but don’t spend much on airfare, so the waiver is one of the reasons I am switching from American to Delta. The other reason is I get more value from Skymiles than I do from AA miles because of the lack of saver level awards on AA.

  4. In the fine print it states that gift cards are not included: “Purchases to meet the spend requirement do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers (balance transfers are not available on Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Cards), cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person payments or purchases of other cash equivalents.”
Does that excluded Delta gift cards?

  5. @ Matt — Correct, if you’ve had a specific card before. But you’re eligible for all four of the individual bonuses.

  6. I think you left out on the delta platinum card you get a free ticket for a companion on your anniversary date every year

  7. If you have one of these cards as an authorized user on someone else’s account, are you ineligible to receive the bonus if you sign up on your own account? On the sign up page it says “Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product.”

  8. @ Tyler — If you’re just an authorized user you’re absolutely eligible. Only those who have been the primary cardmembers on one of the products aren’t eligible.

  9. Are we SURE the max number of credit cards is 5? I have 4 already, don’t want to apply unless I can be approved.

  10. I got the delta gold in June , flew to Europe r/t July and spent over 8000 in first 3 months. I never got bonus miles or $59 credit. Called delta and Amex 5 times and They said soon but still nothing. any suggestions on how to get miles posted. Thank you.

  11. i am still waiting to hear why my 70,000 miles were not credited aftet the last offer ended. I did my part by spendeing more than the required amount, why is Delta Amex not doing theirs?

  12. Unbelievable! I just signed up for this card 2 weeks ago before the promotion was announced. I feel sick to my stomach

  13. The current public offer for the Delta Gold Card is 30k bonus miles for $1,000 spent but if you want to use my refer a friend site it’s 50k for first $2,000 in 3 months and another 10k after $1,000 in the first 6 months + $50 statement credit. Feel free to email me at joetheoneandonly att g mail dot com for the offer!
