The Clock Is Ticking On Great Delta Amex Welcome Bonuses

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. Update: These offers for the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express, the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express and the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express have expired. Learn more about the current offers here.

For about a month now, American Express has been offering very nice increased welcome bonuses on their co-branded Delta credit cards (and a lot of other cards for that matter). If you have been considering one of these cards, you’ll want to apply sooner rather than later, as the application pages indicate that these offers are set to expire on November 9, 2016.

As a reminder, the following cards have increased welcome bonuses at the moment:

Also keep in mind that if you have one of these cards, you can refer your friends to them as well, so you’ll get 10,000 bonus miles for each approved application.

The Platinum version of the card has the highest welcome bonus we’ve ever seen on the card, at 70,000 miles upon completing minimum spend. While SkyMiles most definitely aren’t my favorite mileage currency, at the most basic level the welcome bonuses on the Gold and Platinum cards are worth $500 and $700, respectively:

  • You can redeem SkyMiles for one cent each towards the cost of a ticket on Delta using the “Pay With Miles” feature
  • Redeeming SkyMiles for premium cabin travel on partner airlines still represents a very good deal in many instances; for example, the 70,000 mile welcome bonus is enough for a one-way business class ticket between the US and Europe on carriers like Air FranceAlitalia, KLMVirgin Atlantic, etc.

If you’re considering applying for one of these cards, keep in mind the basic rules of applying for American Express cards:

  • You can typically have at most four charge cards and four credit cards at once (though it doesn’t matter how many are personal and how many are business)
  • You can only earn the welcome bonuses on cards which you haven’t had before, though each of the above four cards counts as a unique product
  • You can apply for two cards in a day, though there’s a chance one card’s application will be delayed (which isn’t an issue, it’ll be automatically processed later on)
  • Anecdotally, the above cards are pretty easy to get approved for

Bottom line

The increased welcome bonuses we’re seeing on the Delta American Express cards are among the best we’ve ever seen. If you haven’t yet had any of the above cards, I’d seriously consider applying for one. I know a lot of people have had the personal versions of the cards, so if that’s the case, consider applying for the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express or Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express.

  1. I just opened both (Gold & Platinum) personal cards pages and saw that “Special offer expires on 2/1/2017†”.. For business cards it still says November 9, 2016.

  2. If you refer someone, they have until 2/1/2017 to submit their application and be approved. The date is noted on the referral email that the recipient receives.
