Marriott has co-branded credit cards issued by both American Express and Chase. In late September, we saw huge new welcome bonuses introduced on these cards. I wanted to post a reminder, because at least a couple of the offers are limited time, and the clock is ticking.

Let’s go over the four offers, starting with the two American Express cards and then the two Chase cards.

Amex Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card offer

Through November 3, 2021, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card is offering a limited time two-part welcome bonus:

  • Earn 150,000 Marriott Bonvoy points after spending $5,000 within the first three months
  • Earn one bonus free night award (valid for a one-night redemption of up to 85,000 points) after spending $5,000 within three months; this is the first time I ever recall seeing an 85,000 point certificate as part of a welcome offer, and this is valid at all properties except Category 8 hotels in peak season

This is a huge bonus, that has a value of up to 235,000 Bonvoy points. But there are reasons beyond the bonus that you’ll want to get this $450 annual fee card (Rates & Fees):

  • The card offers a $300 statement credit every cardmember year, valid for virtually any spending at Marriott properties (you should more or less get face value out of that, meaning that the card should really “cost” you $150 per year)
  • The card offers an anniversary free night award every year, valid at a property costing up to 50,000 points per night (this is more valuable than the free night certificates offered on other cards)
  • The card offers 15 elite nights towards Marriott Bonvoy status annually, making it much easier to earn a higher status tier
  • The card offers complimentary Gold Elite status, valid for as long as you have the card
  • The card offers the ability to earn Platinum status, by spending $75,000 on the card in a calendar year

Amex Marriott Bonvoy Business Card offer

Through November 3, 2021, the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card is offering a limited time two-part welcome bonus:

  • Earn 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy points after spending $5,000 within the first three months
  • Earn two bonus free night awards (each valid for a one-night redemption of up to 50,000 points) after spending $5,000 within three months

This is an absolutely incredible bonus, that has a value of up to 225,000 Bonvoy points. But there are reasons beyond the bonus that you’ll want to get this $125 annual fee card (Rates & Fees):

Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card offer

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card is offering a fantastic bonus, described as the best points offer yet. The card is offering a two-part welcome bonus:

  • Earn 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy points after spending $5,000 within the first three months
  • Earn one bonus free night award (valid for a one-night redemption of up to 50,000 points) after spending $5,000 within three months

This is an awesome bonus, that has a value of up to 175,000 Bonvoy points. But there are reasons beyond the bonus that you’ll want to get this $95 annual fee card:

Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bold Card offer

The Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card is offering an improved bonus, described as the best points offers yet. The card is offering a bonus of 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points after spending $2,000 within the first three months.

This is a solid bonus when you consider that this is a no annual fee card. Not only that, but there are reasons beyond the bonus that you might want to consider this card. Most significantly, the card offers 15 elite nights towards Marriott Bonvoy status annually, which is pretty awesome for a no annual fee card.

Which Marriott credit cards should you apply for?

All four of these offers are excellent, and the best card for you depends on your particular situation. Keep in mind the specific application restrictions on these cards, and also each card issuer’s general application restrictions. For the Chase cards, that would include the 5/24 rule.

If I didn’t currently have any co-branded Marriott credit cards but wanted to change that, I’d apply for the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card and Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card. Why?

  • Generally I find American Express cards to be easier to be approved for than Chase cards
  • Based on the application restrictions on each of the Marriott cards, you would be eligible for both of the above cards, assuming you don’t have any other Marriott cards
  • The cards have the two best welcome bonuses of any of the cards — between them you could earn 275,000 Bonvoy points, plus three free night certificates (two valid for up to 50,000 point per night redemptions, one valid for up to 85,000 point per night redemptions)
  • By having a personal credit card and business credit card you’d earn 30 elite nights towards status annually, getting you 60% of the way to Platinum Elite status

It’s hard to beat the value of that, if you ask me…

Bottom line

Marriott’s co-branded credit cards have some phenomenal welcome bonuses that are seriously worth considering. The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card and Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card arguably have the best bonuses, though the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card and Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card have excellent bonuses as well.

If you don’t have these cards but are eligible, consider applying. Just make sure you check the eligibility requirements, since they can be hard to keep track of on co-branded Marriott cards.

Do you plan on picking up any Marriott cards with these bonuses?

Be careful w/AMEX. If you've had Marriott Cards or even SPG cards in the past you will not be eligible for the signup bonus. Check this carefully before applying, many have gotten burned. It also has been reported that AMEX will inform you upon application if you aren't eligible due to having a similar prior but that wasn't the case for me.

I was looking at the Myconian Kyma, a category 5 hotel. And rates are 99,999 Euros per night in August of next year which is crazy. They don't have any availability (paid or award) for the rest of 2022, is there a reason why?

  3. bonvoy_me_harder_daddy

Are these nights credited during the current year or at a fixed point each year? (i.e., if someone were on the bubble for Titanium or Ambassador for 2021, could it push them over?)

    1. bonvoy_me_harder_daddy

This was answered in one of the links:

    Awesome write up Lucky
    Thank You

Has anyone else noticed that Marriott is now showing rates with all taxes and fees directly in the search results? I've never noticed that before, and it has long been a source of great frustration. New feature perhaps?

  6. Tuan

Just applied for Boundless & approved

    @DCS
Much better than Hilton since you said Hilton points are for the clueless over Marriott
I saw that comment on a different blog post

  8. Marissa

After you apply for Bonvoy Business, how long after should I wait to apply for the Brilliant? 30 days?

    1. Eskimo

It depends on what other Amex card you applied.
In general 1/5 and 2/90 for Amex.
      So 5 days.

  9. Daniel

Don't be so enthusiastic about the Bonvoy Brilliant card yet. We applied for it in last week of August and even though we were approved for the card. We were refused the signup offer of 100,000 Bonvoy points for no reasons given. We are still waiting for our appeals after a month and have not received any decisionsions. We read all the fine prints and did not violate any of the requirements.

I suspect it will be negative.

  10. Thomas

Hi Ben, after carefully reading the restrictions, my understanding is you can NOT have two Marriott cards. I have in fact the Bold card and received the welcome bonus within the last year. When I tried to apply for either if the Amex (personal or business) it warns me saying that I will not receive the bonus as I already received one through my Chase card within the last 24 months. So why are you saying one could apply for two cards???

    1. Ben Schlappig

@ Thomas -- It depends on which cards you have. You can get the two Amex cards, while you can't get one Amex and one Chase card, depending on the combination. The terms of each offer lists all the exclusions.

    2. Thomas

Thanks, i understand. So anyone that already got the Chase card is SOL

    3. Eskimo

These Bonvoy card restrictions really shows reading comprehension problem and to some extent deductive skills.

Maybe it's time for Chase and Amex to make it even simpler for the public to understand. The education system has failed us again.
Or maybe it's about time Amex, Chase, Bonvoy and OMAAT for Se habla espanol.

  11. JC

If I get the Amex Brilliant card and want to gift my son a stay, would he be able to pay for his stay if he uses my credit card? That way I take advantage of the $300 statement credit since I don't have upcoming travel. Essentially he would make the reservation with his Marriott account, I would just give him my card to pay for it.

    1. Eskimo

Essentially, all credit cards are non transferrable. Now if the establishment failed to do a positive ID check that's a different issue ;)

However, you can still use it for prepaid stays or you can add your son as an authorized user so he has his own card.

  12. Jorge

I have the boundless card and the business card, last bonus I received was almost 2 years ago (boundless)…..do I qualify for the Bold? Restrictions are confusing.

    1. Eskimo

Unless you're grammatically wrong, No, you don't qualify.

  13. Ron

Can you get a SECOND business card (and get the full bonus offer) for a separate business that you own and run if you already hold the biz card now?

  14. Luis

The offer on the business card is really generous compared to what it's been in the past. Too bad I already have that card.

  15. Ryan

Saw the Bonvoy Brilliant offer of 150,000 points and an 85,000 point free night cert offer, as well.

Any down side to jumping on that, given rumored upcoming refresh of the card?

    1. SQ51

What are the rumored changes coming?

    2. Eskimo

There is no rumors of refresh or changes.
There is just a survey that a blogger (not this) mistook it as an upcoming thing.

I would jump on the 150k offer if you're qualified.
If a new card (if any) comes out I don't think the offer is going to get better at the $450 annual fee.

    3. eponymous coward

There is always the potential that any card can nerf benefits, publish a bigger sign up bonus, increase the future annual fee whatever.

I think it’s short sighted to pass up over $1k of value in your pocket NOW because you’re afraid of what might happen later (that you have no definitive proof of), but if that’s how you want to roll, the world won’t end if you don’t sign up for a credit card.

This is a better offer that what I got when I grabbed the Brilliant in late 2020: 100k + 25k at renewal + Platinum for 2021, but it was a historically high offer at the time, and with the $20 monthly dining credit + $300 Marriott credit + 100k bonus the card is way over positive expected value during year one, and still positive EV in year two with $300 credit + 25k bonus + free night. I could either be upset because I could have waited a year, or just accept I got a good deal at the time it was available, and it’s still a good deal.

  16. Brutus

The new Bonvoy Brilliant offer of 150,000 points and an 85,000 point free night cert is curiously absent from this post.

    1. Bling

Give Ben the time to sort stuff out on the affiliate side. It'll be posted soon.

    2. Andrew

Seems like you can’t get this offer from a personal referral currently. Wonder if this will change or if it’s intentional.
