And, yet, these airlines collect less in fares than it costs to fly the planes. How economically blind can one be who thinks "that they can rip off the consumer"? Charging less in fares than the costs to fly = rip off? I am so tired of this naive chant of the uninformed (or are they informed and just want to stir the pot?).

true. and that capacity reduction has helped the industry overall. With NK's overlap with DL's DTW hub, DL has benefitted most by NK's shutdown. B6 also is rapidly shrinking in BOS and JFK where DL is the largest airline. It is a legitimate question about why airlines do so poorly in markets where DL is strong more so than exists for other airlines in other markets.

UA copies DL's strategies but UA by far is the leader in rhetoric. IOW, DL tells UA what to do and then Kirby claims to be the smartest person in the room because he explains the strategies to the world while DL just acts first.

@Santastico, well, Sun Country does fly out of MSP non-stop to many domestic destinations so I guess you mean Delta has more of an international monopoly but those are not that many out of MSP anyway. Most people in the USA have to make a connection if wanting to fly out to half the continents. If people wanted to live in a city with the most non-stop destinations, they would have to move to NYC or Chicago.
