From a passenger experience standpoint, one major positive is that historically the plane has only had nine seats per row in economy on full service airlines, rather than 10. That will likely soon be changing,…

They're quoted as saying, "you can play with the angles on the sidewalls and you can play a little with the armrest and then you can be very clever with the design of the seat. It will be 16.8” or 16.9”, something like that."

The current seats are 18" as you say. These seats will be even more narrow, meaning almost no armrest, and a very tight cabin.

It's not possible, even with pushing the walls out to maintain the current seat sizes. So the seat sizes are smaller.

FrenchBee and Philippine Airlines have these now. The seats are 16-17" wide. The laws of physics won't allow you to maintain the 18" minimum, no matter what any spokesperson for the airline industry says.

The fact that these companies are still in business, despite horrible reviews online tells us that people love to complain all over the internet, but will not spring the money on a more comfortable flight. There are many carriers with an A350 in 9-abreast. Surprise! The tickets cost more. But the 10-abreast carrier flights are full, so people are voting with their wallets. They prefer cheap over comfortable seats and will cope with it by complaining online.

Maybe airlines will offer you, you know, a very comfortable experience, say, like with Champagne, delicious food, a seat that turns into a bed when you push a button, priority boarding where you get on before everyone else, and a whole lot of space where you can put your bags next to you in a locker! I have an idea, we'll call it "First Class" to make it really special, so people feel like the experience is spectacular!

Oh? What? You mean the plane doesn't fly for free? What?? Fuel and maintaining the aircraft so it doesn't fall out of the sky isn't free? What??? the pilot and staff won't work for free? My goodness. Ok, ok. How much does this cost? WHAT?? $30,000 for fuel alone from LA to Chicago? WHAT?? Pilots take years to train to fly these big beasts and that costs money and they need to be paid a lot to fly this thing? WHAT?? The airport that we all walk in for free isn't really free? There are people who built it, clean it, and run around making sure it works?? They need to be paid too??

Ok, fine. How much for this comfortable experience? Oh, so I can pay $1000 for one of these "First Class" seats. Well, I only have $100. What can I get for that? Oh, 9 or 10 seats cramped together, so my $100 can contribute towards the cost of getting from A to B? Ok. I'll just complain on the internet about how greedy these airlines are for the audacity to not give me one of these "First Class" experiences when I only have a hundred bucks. That'll show 'em!

Airbus is making this change because we, as customers are too cheap to pay for seats. We click on the lowest price for any airline and grumble that the seat is cramped. In a race to the bottom, the only thing airlines can do to reduce costs and even offer you this seat rental is a) add more seats, b) reduce service, and c) charge for everything.

When you rent a car (which is what you're doing in an airplane, you're renting a seat to get you from A to B) you pay extra for child seats, you pay extra for a GPS, you pay extra for insurance, you pay extra to have it gassed up when you return it. You pay more for a bigger, more luxurious car. Why is it any different on an airplane? You're still renting something for a fixed amount of time, and the quality of that time depends on how much you're willing to pay for it.

Someone has to pay for the $300+ million airplane, the $10,000-$50,000+ in fuel costs, the government taking their cut (in taxes and fees), the airport fees, the maintenance of the aircraft, and the salaries of all of those people caring for you during your rented seat journey.

You have the option of paying more to rent a bigger seat (Premium Economy), you pay more to get a bed (Business/First), but if you're only willing to pay the bare minimum, don't expect a top-of-the-line luxury BMW for the price of a beat up Chevy hatchback.

In 2000, American Airlines added more legroom with the “More Room Throughout Coach” program. It added more legroom, but obviously they couldn’t add as many seats. They charged like $10-30 more per ticket (to make up the loss in space) but they found out people weren’t willing to pay for the premium and they went back to normal cramped seats.

If you want to fly like the 70s, you still can. In 1975, the price of an LA to Chicago flight was $138. Adjusted for inflation, it’s about $781 in 2024 dollars. Guess what? You can get a first class ticket on United today for 600-900. About the same as it cost in 1975.

Before slamming the companies as being greedy, you should do a little research to see that at these bottom of the barrel prices, you cannot expect to fly in luxury cabins. Be thankful you even have a choice. In 1975, there was only one $138 option.

The laziness and selfishness you speak of only is coming from the person in the mirror.

Maybe Boeing can sell the IP to COMAC. Kidding aside, I, like many other fliers pick and choose the tickets I buy very carefully, and always consider the actual airplane used. A330s, B767 still offer incredible relative value in Y. A350 too, but 10-abreast in this airframe will have to be tested to be trusted!
