Based on every review I've read detailing problems faced by cabin crew with passenger access to toilets, I am not looking forward to my first flight on Aer Lingus' 321XLR from RDU to DUB next month. When I booked my Economy (plus) seats for the flights for our annual relocation to our Irish home, the seat map depicted a wide-body configuration. I then received an email noting a seat change, and only then did I discover it was caused by the aircraft change to the narrowbody 321XLR.
My wife and I both have mobility disabilities. The thought of struggling on a 7-hour flight down a single, narrow aisle to the limited number of toilets is depressing. We both take medication for Advanced Kidney Disease. Need I say more? This flight and the return will definitely be the last time we book a flight with any airline on an Airbus 321XLR, regardless of cost or schedules.
As an afterthought, we generally book Business class on the west-to-east leg. I watch for the prices to drop. When I viewed the Business seats on Aer Lingus' 321XLR, there was no chance I would pay premium dollars or Euros for THOSE cramped seats!

Amongst other technical improvements, A321 neo/XLR was introduced to the market mainly due to improved economy and reduced per seat flight cost, hence reducing the cost for passengers. However, since the inception of its service many airlines have bumped up their ticket prices on A321 routes and its cost effectiveness has only helped airlines to increase their mark up and passengers only get to travel in a much less spacious cabin for the same price. This is in particular troubling on an intercontinental or over Atlantic routes where this small aircraft can not even handle the regular turbulence. In intense weather conditions this issue plus a lot of other issues make the flight a quite unpleasant experience. My vote is definitely against this plane for long haul travels.

I know there are considerations for different planes -e.g. some planes are quieter than others, some give the impression of being more roomy, some have more toilets, etc, but let's face facts: most people fly economy.

So boarding slower (at least to me) isn't that important (oh I only wish I was in business class!), nor is the appearance of space. The number of toilets may be a consideration if one breaks, but fortunately I've never been on a single flight where that happened... and even on wide bodies you sometimes have to wait. And with apologies to the cabin staff, having a smaller galley isn't going to bother me as a passenger.

I'll tell you what does matter though: seat comfort and seating space. That's the real difference to me. Flying in economy is still uncomfortable by varying degrees -most especially on overnight flights where grabbing sleep can be difficult -on every widebody I've ever been on. Of course I know how uncomfortable economy seats are on the plane is more dependent on how the airline configured it, rather than the plane.

So if you tell me that economy configuration with respect to seat comfort and space on an A321XLR for an airline I'm going to take is comparable with an economy configuration on a 787 or an A330 or an A350 or any other plane on the same airline, I really don't care. One thing I am sure of: a first class seat on an A321XLR will beat any economy seat on any other wide body.....

I have just flown on Etihad's A321 XLR SEAT 38D from Abu Dhabi and in future will avoid this type of aircraft for long haul flying
-This aircraft is trying to give a long haul experience on a budget airline base and fails. Apart from slightly wider economy seats and larger screen, it's just like flying on an Easjet but for many more hours
-There are simply not enough toilets on this aircraft for long haul flying
- One of the toilets has been removed from the rear of the aircraft normally two on an A320/321 to give the crew a bit more room to work from already limited space.
- The crew are trying to deliver a full long economy long haul meal service from limited rear space
_The result is chaos with passengers queueing to use one toilet at the rear of the aircraft in the same space the crew are trying to rollout meals
-The crew used a curtain to block off passenger's using the toilet resulting in frayed tempers by both crew and passengers
There are simply not enough toilets in this aircraft for long haul flying
-The crew had blocked access to the 4 rear overhead storage bins for their own suitcases meaning large bags being stored under seats on an already cramped aircraft
- Although experts do handstands about the range and long thin routes etc. the exercise in using a stretched A320 for long haul flying fails in my opinion

Therefore, they are now all having wet dreams with the A321XLR because all the aforementioned operating cost benefits. To hell crew working space, to hell crew resting space, to hell 162 coach passengers only having 2 lavs in the back at their disposal. Food and beverage quality on trans atlantic runs? With galley space reduced by almost 50%, you can bet both the quality AND the quantity of what you will receive, especially in coach, will be less. Will the airfares reflect this downgrade? Please don't make me laugh! This is airline greed at it's most blatant.
