I have never been in the "2" part of 1-2-1 J. I'm not hung up on windows (though I like them), but the middle section seems, in some layouts, to be far less private. The new AF 350 J layout seems as private as you can get for a middle section. But, darn it, I'd probably pay to lock in a window seat. I may not have to right away, as my AF flights are all bought through DL and have a DL flight number. I freely admit that I'd pay 2× each year for my ocean-crossing J flights to get what I have now and hope to be spared by pax with more elastic demand curves.

It cost an airline virtually nothing to add you to a flight with an empty seat. Nobody who understands economics thinks cost is the only determinate of price.
