Earlier I wrote about the increased welcome bonuses on the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® and CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®, which are among the best we’ve ever seen.

While both cards have excellent welcome bonuses, the bonus on the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Business Card is especially noteworthy for several reasons:

  • The card is offering a welcome bonus of 70,000 AAdvantage miles after spending $4,000 within four months, which is an even bigger bonus than we’re seeing on the personal card
  • The $99 annual fee is waived for the first 12 months
  • Eligibility for this card is independent of whether you have any Citi AAdvantage personal card, so a lot of people are eligible for this card
  • Generally applying for Citi business cards doesn’t count towards 5/24, in case that’s a limit you’re trying to stay under

I value the welcome bonus on this card at $910 (1.3 cents per mile), which is a massive bonus.

This is such a great offer that I’m encouraging my friends and family who are eligible to apply. Several people have asked me how tough it is to get approved for this card, so I had Ford apply for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Business Card as a guinea pig just now, and he was instantly approved. He’ll get a lot of value out of this card, and the 70,000 bonus miles don’t hurt either!

For those who haven’t yet applied for a business card in general, or haven’t applied for one with Citi, let’s talk a bit about that process. You’ll be asked to provide your:

  • Business name
  • Business address & phone number
  • Annual business revenue
  • Legal structure of business
  • Organization type
  • Line of business
  • Number of employees
  • Years in business
  • Country of business formation

You should always answer all credit card applications truthfully, and I think most people don’t realize how easy this can be:

  • Business name — if you’re not incorporated, your business name could just be your name
  • Business address — if you work from home, this could be your home address
  • Annual business revenue — if you have a new business, there’s no shame in saying zero
  • Legal structure of business — if you’re not incorporated, a “sole proprietorship” is an acceptable business structure
  • Number of employees — this can just be you
  • Years in business — if the business is new, you can say zero years

People assume that you need a business that has hundreds of thousands of dollars of revenue and that has been around for years with several employees to be approved for a business card, and that’s simply not the case.

If you’ve never gotten a business card before, or if you’re looking for a great card that won’t count as an inquiry towards 5/24, I’d highly recommend picking up this card. I guess I’m training Ford well, because earlier when I asked him if he wanted to apply for the card, he said “no, I want to get under 5/24.” When I explained this card wouldn’t count towards that limit, he was much more agreeable.

  1. That is a nice bonus. I’m glad, though, that my wife got hers a couple months ago with just the 60k mile bonus after $3k in 3 months that they then matched to 75k miles via secure message.

  2. “Unfortunately, we were not able to approve your application.”

Always get approved by Chase for a business card but always denied by Citi.

  3. @AndrewOnTheRoad: I, too applied and got approved a few months ago for this business card with the 60k bonus. Are you saying that you contacted Citi through your account’s secure message, and asked for the difference (15k)? Thanks.

  4. @Daniel B. Yep. That’s pretty much exactly what I did. I applied for the 60k biz card offer back in March and then sent them a secure message via the online message center asking if I could get a courtesy match to the 75k offer a friend had told me about. Within a day or two the additional 15k miles were in the AA account.

  5. @AndrewOnTheRoad: Great idea, thanks! Will try it (even though in the last month I have been using my freshly approved 2 Ink business cards, and not the AA one :-))

  6. @AndrewOnTheRoad. I used Lucky’s links :-)))).
But seriously: I applied for the Ink Preferred and got an approval immediately for 20k limit. Next day applied for the Ink Cash, got the: “we need more time….” message. The following day they pulled my credit report (I tracked it). Five days later I called Chase’s regular line to ask how many cards I have under my SSN. They told me the number and I knew that the other got approved, too. 5 days later got the Ink Cash card with only 5k limit.
Then I used the special link which I had in my account to invite 1) my wife and 2) my business partner (Chase promised me 20k bonus per approved application), and both of them got the “we need more time” message, despite the fact that my friend has a successful business with a lot of revenue and he has been a longtime Chase customer. Just yesterday he got an approval email – but my wife’s application is still pending. So I guess I was just lucky.

  7. Is Ford the same person as Emily of Million Mile Secrets? A lot of the plot setups are the same

  8. If I have a citi personal American air card opened more than 24 mo ago, can I still be approved for a new one?

  9. is it subject to Citi’s rule of no bonus if you opened/closed this card in the past 24 months?

  10. I winter in Mexico and am a USA citizen. I applied for the business card and got a message saying it could not be processed. Thinking it was denied because of IP address, I applied for the position personal card at 50k .It was. Approved but I didn’t want it, I will I t the business. I never activated the personal card. It’s on my desk in Texas. If I activated now or while they’re giving 60,000 for the personal card, would I be eligible to get the 60,000 or would I just get the 50,000 since I applied for the card about 6 weeks ago and was approved at that time.
    What do you all suggest?

  11. @danny I’m like you I got approve for all credits except Citi. Is it card report to your personal credit score?

  12. I got CSR and Chase Ink (biz) and have CitiAA personal card but for the Citibank Business card they asked for more info–> utility bill with my home address on it (which I thought was odd)–why home address when I’m applying for biz card and have a high credit score? Anyway sent it so will see.

  13. >>AndrewOnTheRoad says:
…my wife got hers a couple months ago with just the 60k mile bonus after $3k in 3 months that they then matched to 75k miles via secure message.

Andrew, where did you find the 75K bonus offer?

  14. @Daniel c Ramos – You can. I had my Citi AAdvantage personal card for 2 years and the annual fee just came due last month for the 3rd year. I haven’t product changed the old one yet but did apply for another personal AAdvantage card with the 60K bonus once I knew I was past the 24 months. Instant approval!

  15. I was targeted for 75K offer but won’t apply for it. This year, I have applied for AE Blue for 20K and Business Starwood for 35K offers in mid and late March, respectively. I have completed the spent requirements and received the bonus offers. I should have applied for Starwood Personal card before it only offered cash bonus. I am still waiting for Chase business manager at a local branch to process my application for Business Ink Prefer for 100K offer during Small Business week. Chase and Citi have been kind to me that they have never turned down my applications. Chase sent my other target offers, such as BA and United , but I did not bite. I expect AE will send me more target offers this year but I won’t be interested. On my application for business cards, I provided the business annual revenue below the actual amount. Both banks know by looking at my expenses because nobody can justify the expenses I charge on the cards compared to the reported annual revenue.

  16. I have a small business since 17 years, and just recently got a FEIN number. I wonder why they never ask for it, wouldn’t that be proof enough that you have a business?

  17. Oddly, I was denied for the personal card about 3-4 months ago.
Today I applied for the business card. Was given the 800 number to call to verify my application. Agent said she was reviewing the application, put me on hold for about 5 minutes, then came back telling me I was approved. She never asked me a single question.

  18. @AndrewOnTheRoad: Tonight I tried what you recommended, that is asking for the 10k difference between the incentive I got and the current 70k bonus, but they told me NO. Maybe because I opened my Citi AA Business card last November. Oh well, t was worth to try.

  19. Lucky
I just got approved too THANKS I only have 12,5k left and I Love AA points as in Rebate and u can change the DATE which I do .Used ur link as always as to who gives me the infor gets the commission .
I got personal card which looks the same so I CALLED and I never had their Bus. card..

  20. If I closed (stupid me) a Citi AAdvantage business card I’d held for more than 20 years (did I say “stupid me”?) more than 24 months ago, am I eligible for the signup bonus if I apply for a new Citi AAdvantage business card? I’m unclear on Citi’s rules for this. Also, BTW, I do NOT have a personal Citi AAdvantage card (if that makes a difference at all). Thanks, in advance, for your clarification.

  21. @ Daniel B.
Bummer. Usually you have to be within your initial 3-months of the new card account in order to have a match request granted.

    @ Alex K.
I honestly didn’t find a 75k offer. That’s the beauty of asking for a match via secure message: you don’t need to have seen the offer, unless it’s a highly targeted one with an offer code. I had merely heard via blogs/Twitter that there were some 75k Advantage biz offers out there so I went ahead and asked.

  22. @Lucky
When does it make sense to get an AA card when you live in a city with a UA hub like IAH airport? I’m interested in diversifying my points but only if it’s “worth my time”. Currently most of my spend is on Chase credit cards so I can transfer to UA, Hyatt, and Southwest (Hobby airport). Thanks!

  23. The only requirement is whether you have a personal Aadvantage card. What does that mean? Do you need a personal one or can’t you have a personal one?

  24. Ben, Thanks for the heads up. I read your deal and within 3 minutes I had a new CITI Business card. I had been planning on a new AA card and this fit the bill.

  25. DP. Applied 6/21/2018. CL 698. CH7 bankruptcy 7.5 yrs ago. Auto approved. Thank you for this post.

  26. Lucky: Is there any way to confirm you will get the bonus? viz, MY records show I cancelled this card in 2015, but I’d hate to find out after I meet the min. spend that THEY disagree or there is some small print about “ever”. I understand that Amex has started telling people who ask whether or not they will get the bonus, just wondering about Citi.

Keep up the great work. Thanks.

  27. @ mbh — You can try to send them a secure message or call them and ask, though there’s no guarantee the information will be accurate. If you know when you canceled the card, and it was over 24 months ago, then you should definitely be eligible for the welcome bonus.
