Update: This offer for the Citi Prestige® Card has expired. Learn more about the current offers here.
Earlier this year Citi really upped their game when it comes to their consumer credit cards. Perhaps the most exciting development were the increased welcome bonuses and refreshes on two of their most popular cards which accrue ThankYou points.
Reader Jake sent along the following question by email:
To answer, let’s first talk a bit about the basics of the two cards:
Citi Premier℠ Card details
This card was refreshed back in April, and is now a really compelling card for everyday spend. It has a $95 annual fee, which is waived the first year.
The card also has an extremely rewarding points earning structure, arguably the most lucrative of any flexible points currency card. It offers:
- 3x points on travel
- 3x points on gas
- 2x points on dining out and entertainment
- 1x point on all other purchases
That’s a pretty well rounded earnings structure. The only downside is that ThankYou points aren’t quite as valuable as Membership Rewards or Ultimate Rewards points, in my opinion, though there are some great uses of the points.

That being said, the card comes with a slew of benefits which make it extremely rewarding, both to hold onto long term and for everyday spend.
The Citi Prestige Card offers the following points earnings structure:
- 3x points on air travel and hotels
- 2x points on dining at restaurants and entertainment
- 1x point for all other purchases
And on top of that it offers the following perks:
- A $250 annual airline credit (with your first year’s annual fee you actually get two of those — that’s $500 of airline credits with your first year’s $450 annual fee)
- A fourth night free hotel benefit
- The most comprehensive Priority Pass membership offered by any card
- A $100 Global Entry fee credit
It’s a card which I think even non-frequent travelers will get quite a bit of value out of, especially when you factor in the airline credits (which can even be applied towards the cost of airfare).

Can you be approved for both cards?
You sure can be! I have both of these cards, and have been getting a ton of value out of them.
Just keep Citi’s policy in mind when it comes to applying for new cards:
- You can only apply for one Citi card every eight days
- You can apply for no more than two Citi cards every 65 days
If you leave a bit over a week between applications, you shouldn’t have trouble being approved for both cards. The order in which you apply for cards doesn’t really matter, so I suppose I’d base it more on which card you’ll get more immediate value out of. In other words, if you’ll get immediate value out of the Citi Prestige Card (Priority Pass access, or the fourth night free benefit), I might consider applying for it first.
Both the Citi Prestige Card and Citi Premier℠ Card are among the most compelling cards on the market, in terms of their welcome bonuses, return on everyday spend, and perks. I have both cards in my wallet, and plan on holding onto them. Just make sure you wait at least eight days between applications, and you should be able to pick them both up.
