Chase and British Airways have just rolled out an interesting new welcome bonus on the British Airways Visa Signature® Card. This card is now offering a bonus that’s structured differently than in the past.

Earn up to 120K Avios with new BA Visa offer

The British Airways Visa is offering four Avios per dollar spent on all purchases within your first year, on up to $30,000 of spend. That means if you spend $30,000 on the card within the first year you’d earn a total of 120,000 Avios.

The card also has a $95 annual fee that’s not waived for the first year.

What also makes this card interesting is that it’s now contactless, meaning that you can tap to pay, without having to mess with either PIN or signature. That’s a pretty awesome development.

$30K of spend also gets you a Travel Together Ticket

As before, the British Airways Visa offers a Travel Together Ticket when you spend $30,000 on the card in a calendar year, which also happens to be the spend requirement to unlock the maximum bonus. So if you spent $30,000 on the card in that timeframe you’d not only earn 120,000 Avios, but would also earn a Travel Together Ticket.

For those of you not familiar with this companion offer, the way it works is that you can have a second person fly with you when redeeming Avios, and you just have to pay the taxes, fees, and carrier surcharges for them, and not the Avios component.

There needs to be award availability for two and British Airways carrier imposed surcharges are significant, though this could still be an excellent deal, especially given how challenging first class transatlantic tickets otherwise are to snag with miles.

If you’re rather avoid redeeming on British Airways due to the high surcharges, there are plenty of other great ways to redeem Avios.

Is this new welcome bonus actually a good offer?

120,000 Avios sounds like a lot, but the new bonus on the card is actually not quite as good as the previous offer. The previous version of the offer was structured as follows:

  • 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening
  • 25,000 additional bonus Avios after you spend $10,000 total on purchases within your first year from account opening
  • 25,000 additional bonus Avios after you spend $20,000 total on purchases within your first year from account opening

In other words, if you spent $20,000 within the first year you’d earn a minimum of 120,000 Avios (100,000 Avios, plus an additional 20,000 Avios through spend). So under most circumstances the new offer isn’t actually better.

Bottom line

It’s worth being aware of the details of the new British Airways Visa welcome bonus, though for most people this won’t actually be a better deal than the old bonus, even though it’s structured differently.

In general British Airways’ welcome bonuses can be worth taking advantage of. While the spend requirements are high, by the time you complete them you’re often close to earning a Travel Together Ticket, which can be valuable.

  1. I would argue that under all circumstances this offer is worse than the old one, unless you don’t even spend $3,000 on the card. With the old one, if you spend $20K you’ll get a 100K bonus plus 20K worth of points from spend. If you spend $30K, you’ll earn 130K points total, plus the travel together ticket. For anyone spending between $3K and $29,999K, they’ll do a lot better with the old offer, not the new one.

  2. +1,000

This new offer is absolutely atrocious, shame on you Lucky for not condemning this offer to the depths of hell.

  3. The old offer is stull available but only when you get it on the chase website. No refferal links though apparently. Very dishonest from Ben
