Update: Hilton has revamped their co-branded credit card products, and the cards mentioned in this post are no longer available. You can find information on the new Hilton credit cards here.

A couple of days ago I wrote about how American Express is offering up to 40,000 bonus Hilton Honors points for adding authorized users to the Hilton Honors™ Surpass® Card from American Express. Specifically, you can earn 10,000 bonus Honors points when you add an authorized user and they spend $1,000 within three months. The promotion is valid for up to four authorized users, giving you the chance to earn up to 40,000 bonus Honors points.

Well, it looks like this isn’t the only card offering a generous bonus for adding authorized users. You can also earn up to 20,000 bonus Membership Rewards points for adding authorized users on The Platinum Card® from American Express. You earn 5,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you add an authorized user and have them spend $500 within three months. You can earn this bonus for up to four authorized users, for a total of up to 20,000 bonus points.

I can’t guarantee everyone will be eligible for this, but to check just log into your Amex account on this page, and then select the Platinum Card. You have two options, both of which should be eligible for the bonus:

  • You can add up to three Platinum Card authorized users for a total of $175 (Rates & Fees), and they get a ton of benefits
  • You can add Gold Card authorized users at no cost; while they don’t get the great Platinum perks, that would still make you eligible for this bonus

This is a promotion that’s most definitely worth taking advantage of, in my opinion. You earn 5,000 bonus Membership Rewards points after spending $500, meaning you’re earning 11 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent up to that amount. That’s awesome.

If you add an authorized user then they’re still eligible to apply for the card in the future; you can be both a primary cardmember and an authorized user. However, do keep in mind that even being an authorized user will count as an “account” towards the Chase 5/24 limit, so maybe that’s a consideration for some.

Bottom line

I love The Platinum Card® from American Express, and find it to be great for the perks it offers, including 5x points on airfare purchases. This bonus is a great opportunity to add some authorized users, regardless of whether you want to add the Gold Card with no annual fee, or prefer to add the Platinum Card.

Adding three authorized users for $175 comes down to under $60 per person, and for that they get Amex Centurion Lounge access, Delta SkyClub access, a Priority Pass membership, Hilton and Starwood Gold status, and much more.

  1. Hey Lucky,

Do you think AMEX would mail these cards overseas if my AUs are overseas? Or would I have to mail them myself?

  2. Hey Lucky,

Just as another data point, I received the AU bonus for the AMEX Platinum by Schwab. I would assume the Mercede-Benz/Ameriprise co-branded cards are eligible as well.

As far as you know, are AUs eligible for calling into and receiving discounts on premium cabins via the International Airline Program?

  3. Lucky, while it’s likely a MAJOR annoyance to repeat for all 3 bureaus: if I get a new credit report entry based on becoming someone else’s Auth. User, can’t it be removed upon request? and thus it wouldn’t have an impact on my 5/24 count? Thanks.

  4. I saw the deal for my plat but right above the agree and submit button it says the deal is not available. Still worth trying?

  5. @ Brandon — I’ve heard that, but don’t have any firsthand experience with it. Maybe someone else can chime in. Thanks for bringing that up.

  6. @ nathan — In my experience they’ll only mail these to the primary cardmember for security reasons and then it’s up to that person to distribute, but maybe someone has a different experience?

  7. So I have an AU card I never activated. What are the chances I can cancel it and re-apply through this and still get the 5k?

  8. @lucky – Its been a wild goose chase for me , I got the email as well 3 weeks ago and tried adding my family members and each time I hit Submit, it goes to Decision Pending page.

I called Amex several times and no one has a clue about this offer. They say they will add the users manually but can’t give me the bonus points offer cuz they cant add it since they dont have an option to do so.

  9. If you add an authorized user as a free gold card from your platinum card, does that Gold card receive 3x points on gas?
