The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN has a big new welcome bonus of up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points, though it also comes with a big minimum spend requirement. This has the potential to be a really lucrative offer.

Details of the new Amex Business Platinum 100K welcome bonus

Through August 8, 2018, the Amex Business Platinum Card is offering a welcome bonus of up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points:

  • Earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $10,000 within the first three months
  • Earn a further 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending an additional $15,000 within the first three months

Obviously this is a big minimum spend requirement, though for a business that has a significant amount of spend, this is an excellent bonus. After spending $25,000 within three months you’d earn 100,000 bonus Membership Rewards points, meaning you’d earn at least 5x Membership Rewards points on the first $25,000 spent (after factoring in the minimum of 1x points you earn for everyday spend).

The card also offers 1.5x points on purchases of $5,000 or more (up to a million bonus points per year), so you can potentially average 5.5x points on the first $25,0000 of spend if your purchases are in big transactions.

As a point of comparison, the previous welcome bonus offered up to 75,000 Membership Rewards points, as follows:

  • Earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $10,000 within the first three months
  • Earn an additional 25,000 Membership Rewards points after spending an additional $10,000 within the first three months

As you can see, the new bonus is quite a bit better — you get an additional 25,000 Membership Rewards points for just $5,000 extra spend. Yes, these are big spend thresholds, but this card typically requires big spend to earn the welcome bonus, so that’s nothing new.

The welcome bonus on this card isn’t available to those who currently have the card or those who previously had the card. The good news is that applying for an Amex business card typically won’t count towards the 5/24 limit, so that’s good for those trying to get under that limit.

What makes the Amex Business Platinum Card awesome

The Amex Business Platinum Card has a $450 annual fee, and offers all kinds of great perks, including:

Select Amex Centurion Lounges offer complimentary spa treatments

Personally I value the $200 airline credit at pretty close to face value. The 10 Gogo wifi passes are also easily worth $150+ per year, given how much inflight wifi would otherwise cost. That nearly covers the annual fee, and that’s not even taking into account the amazing lounge access offered by this card, the hotel status, Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, and so much more.

Bottom line

The new welcome bonus on the Amex Business Platinum Card is a nice improvement over the old one. While the spend requirement is high, this is typically as good as bonuses on this card get, so for someone who can complete the spend, I’d highly recommend picking up this card. Not only does the card have a great welcome bonus, but it also offers outstanding perks that make the card worth holding onto long term.

The business version of the card also has a lower annual fee than the personal version, making it a more compelling option for many.

  1. Can you request a plastic card instead of a metal one? Sapphire Reserve let’s you. The metal cards are too heavy in my wallet, and there’s nothing worse than being behind someone in line who loves to clank their metal card down on the counter at the register

  2. Man, $25,000 is a LOT to put on a card in just 3 months. There are so many other cards that are just as (or more) rewarding for a fraction of the spend. I suppose if you have exhausted all other cards which are available to you, and you have some sort of enormo-gigantic expense coming up, you could swing this but…why?

  3. That is some steep spend. I got a targeted Amex SPG offer for an extra 15,000 Starpoints recently if I spent $20k in 3 months, and I’m just finishing that up now. This would be difficult.

  4. @ travel4brews — It doesn’t. The annual fee is $100 lower, and it doesn’t offer an Uber credit.

  5. We’ve been offered 100k on the personal and I’m not sure I even want it.

The business card seems to have more valuable perks.

  6. Questions does the one time offer apply to owner of the business or the business itself?

  7. @ Noam — The owner of the business. Amex typically limits you to one business card per person anyway, even if you have multiple businesses.

  8. I have 1k status on United so flying them almost 100% of the time. Only downside with Business Amex Platinum is I have never been able to use my Gogo WIFI passes. What am I doing wrong. United has no clue what I am talking about.
