Update: This offer for The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN has expired. Learn more about the current offers here.

Since early September, The Business Platinum® Card from American Express has been offering an increased welcome bonus of up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points.

This is just a heads up that this bonus is being pulled today, so you have just hours to take advantage of this promotion, if interested.

Details: Amex Business Platinum 100K Bonus

Through today (December 4, 2019), the Amex Business Platinum Card is offering a welcome bonus of up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points:

  • Earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $10,000 within the first three months
  • Earn a further 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending an additional $15,000 within the first three months

Obviously this is a big minimum spending requirement, though for a business that has a significant amount of spending, this is an excellent bonus. After spending $25,000 within three months you’d earn 100,000 bonus Membership Rewards points, meaning you’d earn at least 5x Membership Rewards points on the first $25,000 spent (after factoring in the minimum of 1x points you earn for everyday spending).

The card also offers 1.5x points on purchases of $5,000 or more (up to a million bonus points per year), so you can potentially average 5.5x points on the first $25,000 of spending if your purchases are in big transactions.

As a point of comparison, the previous welcome bonus offered up to 75,000 Membership Rewards points, as follows:

  • Earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $10,000 within the first three months
  • Earn an additional 25,000 Membership Rewards points after spending an additional $10,000 within the first three months

As you can see, the new bonus is quite a bit better — you get an additional 25,000 Membership Rewards points for just $5,000 extra spending. Yes, these are big spending thresholds, but this card typically requires a lot of spending to earn the welcome bonus, so that’s nothing new.

The welcome bonus on this card isn’t available to those who currently have the card or those who previously had the card. The good news is that applying for an Amex business card typically won’t count towards the 5/24 limit, so that’s good for those trying to get under that number for future Chase card approvals.

How Much Are 100K Amex Points Worth?

I value Membership Rewards points at ~1.7 cents each, so to me 100,000 points are worth $1,700.

Obviously you can get far greater value than that by transferring your points to airline partners and otherwise taking advantage of the best ways to use Membership Rewards points, but I think that’s a good baseline valuation.

The Business Platinum Card also offers 35% points back when using Membership Rewards Pay with Points to book a flight with your selected airline, or when booking a flight in first or business class on any airline. That means you can get about 1.54 cents per point out of all your Membership Rewards points towards a travel purchase.

That’s a pretty good return, and one that makes the business card particularly compelling.

Bottom Line

The limited time welcome bonus on the Amex Business Platinum Card is ending today, so this is your last chance to apply under this offer.

While the spending requirement is high, this is typically as good as bonuses on this card get, so for someone who can complete the spending, I’d highly recommend picking up this card. Not only does the card have a great welcome bonus, but it also offers outstanding perks that make the card worth holding onto long term.

  1. Wife got approved. My application rejected me for the 100K bonus, apparently because I had 2 Delta Amex cards that came with bonuses a few years ago.

Estimated tax in January will be the minimum spending.

    Australia in 2021.
