The Business Platinum® Card from American Express has a huge new welcome bonus of up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points, though it also comes with a hefty minimum spend requirement. This has the potential to be a really lucrative offer.

Details Of The New Amex Business Platinum 100K Bonus

Through December 4, 2019, the Amex Business Platinum Card is offering a welcome bonus of up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points:

  • Earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $10,000 within the first three months
  • Earn a further 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending an additional $15,000 within the first three months

Obviously this is a big minimum spending requirement, though for a business that has a significant amount of spending, this is an excellent bonus. After spending $25,000 within three months you’d earn 100,000 bonus Membership Rewards points, meaning you’d earn at least 5x Membership Rewards points on the first $25,000 spent (after factoring in the minimum of 1x points you earn for everyday spending).

The card also offers 1.5x points on purchases of $5,000 or more (up to a million bonus points per year), so you can potentially average 5.5x points on the first $25,000 of spending if your purchases are in big transactions.

As a point of comparison, the previous welcome bonus offered up to 75,000 Membership Rewards points, as follows:

  • Earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $10,000 within the first three months
  • Earn an additional 25,000 Membership Rewards points after spending an additional $10,000 within the first three months

As you can see, the new bonus is quite a bit better — you get an additional 25,000 Membership Rewards points for just $5,000 extra spending. Yes, these are big spending thresholds, but this card typically requires a lot of spending to earn the welcome bonus, so that’s nothing new.

The welcome bonus on this card isn’t available to those who currently have the card or those who previously had the card. The good news is that applying for an Amex business card typically won’t count towards the 5/24 limit, so that’s good for those trying to get under that number for future Chase card approvals.

How Much Is The 100K Bonus On The Amex Business Platinum Worth?

I value Membership Rewards points at ~1.7 cents each, so to me 100,000 points are worth $1,700.

Obviously you can get far greater value than that by transferring your points to airline partners and otherwise taking advantage of the best ways to use Membership Rewards points, but I think that’s a good baseline valuation.

The Business Platinum Card also offers 35% points back when using Membership Rewards Pay with Points to book a flight with your selected airline, or when booking a flight in first or business class on any airline. That means you can get 1.35 cents per point out of all your Membership Rewards points towards a travel purchase.

That’s a pretty good return, and one that makes the business card particularly compelling.

Bottom Line

The new welcome bonus on the Amex Business Platinum Card is a nice improvement over the old one.

While the spending requirement is high, this is typically as good as bonuses on this card get, so for someone who can complete the spending, I’d highly recommend picking up this card. Not only does the card have a great welcome bonus, but it also offers outstanding perks that make the card worth holding onto long term.

  1. Sorry, but the Chase Business products are far superior. I was hoping AMEX would step up their game a little.

  2. @ Ben — The $200 airline fee is now worth very little for most of here, sorry. I don’t know about others, but I have better things to do with my time than to figure out how to extract the $200 from AMEX. GoGo passes are provided for free by some other cards, airline wifi is overrated (ie, SLOW), and who wants to work on an airplane anyways? Even in first class, it is horrible place to work.

  3. I had this card before in different business name then my current biz I have now. Can I reapply and capture the bonus?

  4. I just cancelled this card. Got it few years ago and got the 100k bonus. But now they are raising annual fee, useless Dell credit, useless Wework benefit, and very hard to use airline credit means me cancelling. Got the personal card instead. I can use Uber and saks credit but no bonus since I had the card before.

  5. @ Ben

The return is actually 1.54 cents per mile with thee business card. Makes this slightly higher than the car.

  6. I want to love Amex Plat as some of their offerings are very good but it’s hard to fall in love with it since CSR is so much more attractive without any games.

  7. I’m a lifelong Amex user, and own a small travel business that partners with Amex for promotions, but most of the benefits they promote are a joke compared to Chase. they really seem out of touch lately. As a business card, this is extremely lacking in real world benefits. 1X points and most benefits are worse than cards with no annual fee.
