Review: Sheraton Milan Malpensa Airport

Review: Sheraton Milan Malpensa Airport

8

For our last night in Italy we decided to stay at the Sheraton Milan Malpensa Airport, which is connected directly to the terminal. That’s because we had early morning flights, and the city of Milan is quite a distance from Malpensa Airport. The drive from Lake Como took about 50 minutes, and we were dropped off directly at the hotel’s entrance, which was separate from the rest of the terminal.

The hotel had a spacious lobby, and reception was located inside the entrance and to the right. Unfortunately we had to wait over 15 minutes to check-in. There was an SPG elite line, though a certain Dubai-based airline puts up their crews at this hotel, and all 25+ of them were checking out. They all lined up in the SPG Gold line, so there was no way for us to use it. There was only one other associate at reception, and he was handling the most annoying guy imaginable, who was checking out but really wanted a discount, and kept rattling off problems with his stay. Waiting over 15 minutes to check in at a hotel is unacceptable, in my opinion.

Once we were helped the process was quick. We were informed that we had been upgraded to a junior suite, had club lounge access, etc., and they confirmed I wanted the 500 Starpoints as my Platinum welcome amenity. For what it’s worth, our rate was about 120EUR for the one night stay. This is a Category 3 property, so redeeming for a free night would have cost 7,000 Starpoints.

The elevators were located opposite of reception. The lobby had plenty of comfortable couches, as well as a business center in the corner.

Our room was located on the third floor. While this hotel only has a few floors, each of the floors is massive.

Once out the elevator we turned right, and then after walking about halfway down the hall had to make another right turn, where our room was located.

We were assigned room 3071, a junior suite.

For a junior suite this room was big. There was a long entryway with the bathroom to the right and a closet to the left.

The room itself had a king size bed, sitting area, and a desk area.

The sitting area consisted of a couch as well as a chair facing a small coffee table.

The desk was really just a very long table with a leather chair.

There was a wall-mounted TV across from the bed, as well as a randomly placed and sort of sad looking plant.

Then back on the side of the room closest to the entrance was a long counter.

This had a kettle as well as instant coffee and tea.

The room faced another wing of the hotel (I believe), so it didn’t have any airport views.

The bathroom was fairly large though not especially functional. It featured a single sink, a toilet and bidet, and a combined bathtub and walk-in shower area.

The shower was small, and unfortunately the door wasn’t enough to prevent the water from flooding the bathroom.

Toiletries were from Shine, which we’re not huge fans of here at OMAAT.

Interestingly this hotel actually had a Shine Spa, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. The “Shine” brand doesn’t really instill much confidence in me in terms of the quality of the spa.

Overall it was a perfectly nice room for an airport hotel. Unlike at Il Sereno, Wi-Fi was actually high speed, so I was able to get work done.

About an hour after checking in we were brought a box with some sweets as a welcome amenity.

In terms of the hotel’s other features, the club lounge was located on the third floor near the elevators. It’s “open air,” in the sense that it’s not a fully enclosed room. It could be accessed using key cards, or I suppose you could jump over the glass barrier, if you were desperate. 😉

One side of the lounge featured red couches.

Then in the middle of the lounge was a business center with computers and a printer.

Then the other side of the lounge had a dining area.

What impressed me is that the lounge had food all day. We first visited it in the afternoon, and they had what looked like a full food spread.

In terms of drinks there was a Nescafe coffee machine, a fancier espresso machine, bottled water, soft drinks, juice, etc.

Then there was snack mix, cold cuts, cheese, veggies, yogurt, pizza, focaccia, bread, and a couple of types of cake.

Talk about an impressive food spread! Then in the evening they just brought out a few more things, including sandwiches, tomatoes & mozzarella, and a couple more hot dishes.

For dinner we ordered room service pizzas, which were delivered in boxes, and were excellent. It might sound crazy after being in Italy for a week, but we were craving pizza. Cuisine is obviously very regional in Italy, so most places near Lake Como don’t have pizza. So we were thrilled to get a good pizza.

We got a good night of sleep, and the next morning I had an early start to the airport. The Sheraton is connected directly to Malpensa Airport Terminal 1, so it was great not to have to worry about transportation logistics at the crack of dawn.

Sheraton Malpensa Airport bottom line

The Sheraton is a solid airport hotel with nice rooms, a great club lounge, and an ideal location if flying out of Malpensa Airport. I’d highly recommend it if you have an early morning flight and are in transit, where staying in the city just doesn’t make sense.

While the decor of the room leaves a lot to be desired for, the rest of the hotel looks decent, if not quite nice, by Sheraton standards. This is yet another example of why Sheraton is a lost brand. Marriott really needs to re-flag and de-flag a lot of Sheraton properties, along with many of its older Marriott hotels in corporate office parks.

Glad to see this positive review and the additional comments. I stayed here about 6 months after the hotel opened and it was a disaster. Looks like they really cleaned up their act. Very good to know. Thanks!

I stayed there in May and agree with most of the review. I also had an unreasonably long delay checking in and out, and you must check out if you need a receipt as they will not email you your bill. Other contributors also hit a bullseye on this hotel by mentioning the easy access to Milan on the train right outside the lobby doors, as well as to Lake Como (take the train toward Milan 3 stops and then make an easy transfer to Como...about 45 minutes total to either Como or Milan). Also as mentioned, the breakfast buffet was extensive and good. Biggest downside: the upgraded "mountain view room" is not what you think. My first stay there you could barely make out the Alps miles away on a clear day. A week later I returned and it was cloudy, so you would have no idea the Alps were out there. Biggest tip: If you don't have access to the lounge but have a Priority Pass, there is a airport lounge in the terminal pre-security with a decent spread of food options and drinks. It's about a 5 minute walk from the Sheraton lobby.

I can't speak highly enough of this hotel. I was there July 2nd I mean it's an airport hotel. But I simply pulled in the garage & dropped my car at Europcar and feared the slog to the hotel. Um no. Just through the doors. I swam in the pool and my view.....the alps whole swimming. The restaurant food was actually good. I had the sea bass and it was buttery and delicious.

I received the same welcome gift of candies which was nice

Check out a breeze. Walk through an "airport museum" thing to check in and then onto security and into duty free where it's an open theme plethora of consumer overdose (like WDW in Orlando or universal in LA you have to walk through the open themed gift shop after the ride)

The best thing was building the Airport hotel. And the Sheraton is a top tier airport hotel

Definetly worth a stay before you fly out the next morning

The Malpensa Express Train takes about 45 minutes from downtown to Terminals 1 and 2 and leaves every half hour. It's very helpful if you decide to stay in town instead of the airport.

I've stayed at that hotel once before as well and it's a great hotel and very convenient. We also had the pizza while there and it was remarkably good!!

Surprised to see decent food out all day in a Sheraton club lounge, definitely a positive! It overall seems like a good airport hotel. Do you know if any of the rooms had an airport view? One thing that I like about staying at an airport hotel is a nice view of the airport straight from my room, it is something I always request.

The only thing missing is you walk out the back door into the train station with very fast service to the two main stations in town. The hotel is literally on top of the train station. I have also had a excellent breakfast at the main restaurant.
